^Especially, when they're alone at Sea City. While Mary Anne & Stacey, watch the kids. Mallory, helping out. I thought, they'll have one more child. Make it 9. Could be a boy or a girl. Claire, wouldn't be the youngest in the family. Probably, Ann M. Martin want it to be even. Four boys and four girls. Make it boy/girl twins lol. Imagine that chapter 2... "Mal is the oldest of 10! Her siblings include a set of triples AND a set of twins!" That'll be fun to read. Mallory, explain the story of her youngest brother and youngest sister. It was a stormy night, everyone was restless. Would these twins ever be born?

Now that I have two children I am even more baffled by the Pike family lack of age spacing. My daughter turned 1 last month and the mere idea of a newborn let alone triplets is exhausting. We are done with two children though.
Mrs Pike must have had some help during the early years especially since they still needed mother's helpers on vacations. She must have had a nanny or a relative helping out but it was never mentioned. I don't think she would have had the energy to make more babies if she didn't have help.

Maybe they didn't need much help when they only had 4 or 5 kids? But I agree with you because they didn't spend a minute with their children the whole time. It felt like the mother's helpers did all of the work.

It felt like the mother's helpers did all of the work. Four or five kids spaced apart wouldn't be bad. I was the oldest of 5 children spaced 2-3 years apart but I am thinking about when they had a 1 year old toddler and newborn triplets. My 13 month old is still very demanding and needy. Mallory would have been about her age when the triplets arrived. A 1 year old plus 1 newborn might be exhausting but doable. I think with triplets they would need some help at least at first. Maybe a grandma. My brother and his wife have 6 month old twins and moved in temporarily with her parents to have some help with the twins at first especially when he was at work.
