^ yeah, you might be right. Hey, in that respect, my parents could've learned a thing or two. My sister and I watched our much younger sister most nights after school and it never even occured to anyone that we should be paid. Hmmph. U didn't have 2 agree with me, sheesh. ;D Anyways, oh darn the bad influences of certain other BSC members for making Mal want those things. "Oh Claudia has 3 piercings, etc." I want them so bad *boo-hoo*.

No it's good to get another perspective on things. The Pike parents instinctively bug me, so I'm trying to look at them in a new light!

I don't mind the paying their own kid thing to a certain degree. If there was an emergency or Mrs. Pike needed to run some quick errands without her clan of kids then Mal shouldn't have been paid. On a weekend afternoon when Mal could have been playing horses with Jessi or making some money babysitting somewhere else then I think it's acceptable for her parents to pay her to stay home and watch her siblings.
The club's unwritten rule that the girls would get to sit for their own siblings as much as possible was dumb. I'd think the Pikes would be much happier giving a different club member a few bucks so that Mallory would be free to sit somewhere else. Babysitting's not brain surgery but it did give the girls the chance to learn responsibility, follow directions, interact with people, and earn some good references for a "real" job later on in high school...and Mal didn't get any of that by sitting for her siblings all the time.

I agree that the Pike's aren't BAD parents, but maybe just kinda clueless?
I don't think Mrs. Pike ever really realized she was shoving a LOT of responsibility onto Mallory. Sure, occasionally she'd say something like, "Oh, sorry Mal, we'll try to remember to cut you some slack" or something, but Mallory really was taken advantage of.
I thought Mr. Pike seemed pretty cool, like he would be a fun dad. The kinda guy to play ball with the triplets or let them camp in the backyard or something.

No, the Pikes weren't exactly bad, although I hated them when Mallory was recovering from mono and they wouldn't allow her to leave the house, but they made her a live-in full-time nanny.
I just thought it was weird how the Pikes were all into liberal parenting but refused to allow Mallory to wear sparklies and she had to convince them to let her get her hair cut. Meanwhile Claire runs around the house naked and Adam eats popsicles for breakfast!

^ Maybe they like to torture Mallory? I mean, they need some kind of entertainment in their stressful lives - Mrs. Pike with taking care of 10 people, and Mr. Pike having to work hard to support them all?

It's kind of weird that Mr. and Mrs. Pike had time to bone to make Vanessa when they already had four kids under the age of two.

It's kind of weird that Mr. and Mrs. Pike had time to bone to make Vanessa when they already had four kids under the age of two. I was wondering that too. If a couple has a one year old daughter and infant triplets, do they ever have sex? Maybe they are REALLY fertile and it only takes one time. Do they ever say exactly how much age difference (as in months) is between the triplets and Vanessa?

^ I keep thinking that Mrs. Pike cheated. I have absolutely no grounds for coming up with that but . . . meh.

Gah, popping out a kid every year isn't enough for her? I bet they didn't even wait till she was released from the hospital; they wouldn't have to worry about babysitting.

This thread is hilarious! ^ I keep thinking that Mrs. Pike cheated. I have absolutely no grounds for coming up with that but . . . meh. Maybe Mr. Pike isn't Mallory's real father! Didn't they say sometimes that she doesn't look like the rest of the family? She has red hair and they all have brown hair. Maybe Mr. Rodowsky is her father or (gasp) Mr. Hobart (I know he was in Australia at the time but I think it still could have happened)! Don't mind me. I think I'm going a little crazy. About Mr. Pike having "the snip" after Claire, why didn't he have it done earlier, like after the triplets?

The thought of Mr. and Mrs. Pike having sex is seriously freaking me out.
