I was going to suggest that Mimi went by her husband's name, like Mrs. Larry Yamamoto or something...but he was Japanese too, right? So that wouldn't work either.
Does Mimi mean anything in Japanese? I googled it and found sushi restaurants, lol.

i'm not sure... 'mi' is one of the "letters" in the japanese alphabet... i guess, in a way, it could be like calling someone 'tj'? but that doesn't solve the L mystery. i'm gonna go search for my japanese dictionary, i swear i saw it when i moved this summer, and it's against everything i believe in to throw anything away. because it always comes in handy. like right now. 8 years later.

Ages ago I found someone's theory about Mimi's name on Livejournal - that her name was Rin, was anglicised to Lynn (which explains the L on the postcard), and Lynn became Claudia's middle name. That's only a theory, of course, but it's kind of become my personal canon.

that's definitely a good theory though. solves the L mystery i have a feeling that back then, immigrants would want to anglicize their names... i don't think they do as much now-- judging by flipping through the vancouver phone book anyway but yeah, that definitely makes good sense but EAR?

Ha ha. EAR fits her very well actually. She was the non-judgemental listener to all of Claudia and Mary Anne's problems.

^ Haha, that's going to be all I can think about when I read the about Mimi now.
I liked Mimi, I remember crying buckets when I first read that she had died. I always wondered why we got stuck with Nannie moving into the Brewer-Thomas zoo, driving the Pink Clinker and bowling, when Mimi died so soon. (Nannie is a source of irritation to me - she just seems so unnecessary). I remember wanting to swap them around. I guess Mimi was older?? Still, though, I didn't understand why she even had to have a stroke - Claudia and Mean Janine could have stuck to being just about mean Janine.

I'm kinda happy that Mimi was killed off early in the series because I didn't want to have read about her being ill. I liked how she gave advice to Mary Anne in Mary Anne Saves The Day.

going back to the discussion about what mimi means, i know it's a pretty common word for "grandma." i know lots of grandmas who go by mimi, which is a little confusing because mimi is the nickname i have for my baby sister :] but maybe when claudia and janine were little they started calling her mimi instead of grandma or granny, and it caught on.

There's a few anime characters named Mimi, although I don't know if that means much.
Frankly, I don't think that people thought as much about cultural appropriateness of names and what not in 1986, so it may not be worth it to read into the thought process so much.
