For some reason, I thought I remembered reading about MA visiting her Grandma and struggles in their relationship. Her grandma seemed kind of cold and uptight and MA wanted to go home. I thought this was in MA and Secret in the Attic but it wasn't. I haven't read Mary Anne's Book lately so it might be in there. Or did I dream it or something??? In BSC in the USA, I like her grandma. Was she different in any of the books or am I losing my mind?

It was in Mary Anne's Book. They don't know how to act around each other/get fed up with each other, and MA feels like going home. They make up of course, which accounts for their nice(r) relationship in BSC in the USA.

I forgot about Mary Anne's Grandma until recently. And now I keep picturing her as Anna Nicole Smith's mom for some reason. Stupid Fox News that's always playing at work...

MAs grandma always just seemed to me like she was still bitter MA was taken from her. I never really cared for her much. It's understandable though, because she raised MA for 18 months or whatever and then never saw her again til she was 13.

We didn't get to read much about her in MA and the secret in the attic, but for hat I've read of when Mary Anne was visiting her, she seemed nice, though. The whole grandparent idea is weird though. I think in Kristy's great idea Kristy mentions that Mary Anne's mother and all four of her grandparents died within one year. If that is the story the kids are told, it's logical for Mary Anne never to have wondered about her grandparents before. But why would Kristy's mom tell Kristy such a thing?

Mary Anne's grandmother seemed to be very kind and warm hearted. She just wanted what was best for her. I liked the interaction between Mary Anne and her grandmother in Mary Anne's Portrait.

Maybe that's what Kristy's Mum thought? Maybe it's what Richard told everyone?
Yeah, what's her name... Grandma did seem pretty bitter. You think she'd be overwhelmed to see MA, and not taking her anger out on MA, over what Richard did.

Maybe that points to the sort of relationship Verna had with Alma...after all Verna tells Mary Anne she acts so much like her mother, maybe the two of them bickerered more often than they would have liked. A reason Alma moved out of Iowa?

I think the visit in MA's book was also hard because Bill (?) had just died and Verna was still in the first stages of grief, where no one is really at their best, and where she probably did feel the most anger about the situation not being resolved in time for him to see Mary Anne again. When we see her later, she's had more time to cope with losing her husband, and then she seems okay with Richard as well as bonding with Mary Anne.

I liked her in BSC in the USA. I loved how she pawned Jack in that book. I thought he deserved it. I liked reading the interaction between her and Mary Anne in Mary Anne's book, BSC in the USA and Everything Changes.
