DM could have played with Andrew more though, even though Andrew wasn't there 24/7, he was still around, and only 3 years younger.

I disliked David Michael. He was always so bossy and demanding. Charlie, Sam and Kristy were much nicer than he was. I don't understand what the big deal was with Karen talking about the things that happened at her school. I think David Michael is very jealous of Karen.

i think the biggest reason DM would be jealous of karen is because people fall all over her for no reason. she's annoying and loud and he just gets overshadowed. he goes from being the baby of the family to an older brother to three kids in just a few short books, and then kristy totally dumps him for karen and emily. that would be hard for anybody, especially a kid whose family has already been mixed up for so long. i don't think DM is whiny at all -- not by a long shot, compared to karen. but during his less mature moments, you just have to realize all the crap this kid has been through.

Wasn't David Michael described as having dark, curly hair? For some reason, even though we were told that, I never pictured him that way in my head. I did that a lot - even if we were told what someone looked like, often I pictured them completely different.
Oh, and I agree that he was overshadowed somewhat by Karen. Karen was loud and demanded attention from everybody, constantly insisting on being in the spotlight.

His hair wasn't drawn curly in the LS books.

Amen to that, oldhickory! I think DM and Andrew got the same rotten deal. In the earlier books, I am re-reading the Series now, I'm noticing how much younger DM, especially is written. A year later when he's 7, it's like he's "all grown up" in comparison. In KGI Kristy says, she feels badly for DM as he sits at the kitchen table listening to his mom make call after call for a baby-sitter (no one available.). Kristy says something like "It's not DM's fault he's only 6 and can't take care of himself yet." You'd hardly know that a year later when the poor kid is shoved aside almost completely. DM basically="Linny's friend" or a "klutz with a good heart at softball" that's when he's not being ignored.
Andrew, in a way I feel worse for because his own future stepmother tells Kristy that "he (Andrew) almost doesn't need to speak because he has Karen for a sister." (In KGI, too). I think that was Andrew's fate in the sense that he would get a few word description, while Karen would get a novel. I have not read many LS books (not a Karen fan) so can't truthfully say if Andrew was treated any better in them.

Did David Michael (post move) play with anyone, have any other friends, besides Linny? Aside from at Shadow Lake or on the Mystery Train. I know he made an ill-fated attempt at inviting Carver Ensign over one day when Kristy was in charge. I think Linny was it.

I just thought: a David Michael spin-off *could* have been interesting, like the Little Sister series (Babysitter's Little Brother, anyone?) haha. I just thought that it could have been a potentially cool series for boys, whereas the girls (and gays) could have had Little Sister.

He always seemed a little whiny, but still cute. But I was reading Kristy+Bart=? earlier, and I just wished she'd have pushed him down the stairs or something. He definitely got worse as the books wore on. Between him and Karen, useless Andrew, and the Kristy problem, I wouldn't have gone near that mansion for all the money in Watson's bank account. i think the biggest reason DM would be jealous of karen is because people fall all over her for no reason. she's annoying and loud and he just gets overshadowed. he goes from being the baby of the family to an older brother to three kids in just a few short books, and then kristy totally dumps him for karen and emily. that would be hard for anybody, especially a kid whose family has already been mixed up for so long. i don't think DM is whiny at all -- not by a long shot, compared to karen. but during his less mature moments, you just have to realize all the crap this kid has been through. Very good point(s). I agree that DM got a really raw deal. And Karen was God's gift to childhood in the eyes of Kristy and the rest of Stoneybrook. In the early books, you get a sense that Kristy is close with all three of her brothers (albeit in different ways), but DM especially. After the families blended, Karen and Emily were all that mattered.

This post reminded me of how older brothers and sisters are always built-in babysitters, as was the case with David Michael. It's kind of like a double-edged sword to me. I don't like how older siblings are "used" -- in a way -- for babysitters (that happened to me) but at the same time I can understand the convenience for parents (and how sometimes parents are just in a bind).
^ You brought up Kristy + Bart = ? and I thought DM was a brat to Kristy. Whenever I see him acting up toward her I'm surprised. DM...Kristy is like your second mom. But I get how he is the younger brother, too.

^ I am applauding your post BuckinghamAlice, love it. Very well said. Andrew also fell by the wayside. Since he was even younger than DM AND had already lived 3-4 years with Karen, his rotten deal was almost worse. They both were definitely treated horribly. Virgo, you know my LS opinion. I've said this before but I would have greatly preferred a spin-off where each of the clients got a book. One Karen, one Andrew, one DM, maybe one Pike Super Special, etc. That would have been so much more interesting than Karen.

He was friends with Nicky Pike in a few Super Specials, like On Board and Shadow Lake. I always figured that they played together a lot "off page"
