I never thought about that! If she had the rest of seventh grade to go through, and then all of eighth grade (because she evidently didn't pay attention the first ten years she was there), then how could she switch back to the eighth grade so quickly?! Oh, my head. lol! Maybe the should have done a book called the 'mystery of claudia'a school troubles'. I think she probably is lazy but then she's also slow..and can't keep up pace with the other kids. She did explain to shannon about how she's too afraid to ask in front of the other kids and doesn't like asking after school because she feels like an idiot. And we all know what happens when you use that tactic. Also, doesn't she refuse to go to the resource room because she wants to do everything herself without help. I think the ghost writers are having a laugh.

Maybe there's something in her brain, let's say...common sense, that's comatose from sugar shock.
That said, I think it would have been funny, and probably effective, if Janine offered her a chocolate treat every time she got an answer right. She already does the "Good girl!"

In one of the new ones I read (Stacey's Secret Friend), the English class is studying the Canterbury Tales. Even if they weren't reading them in Middle English, but in translation, that seems pretty unlikely to me--people bitched endlessly about having to read those in AP English as seniors! i read those for class in fifth grade (in translation, of course). I always found the sms curriculum, especially when it came to english and math, too easy. like stacey the math whiz doing pre-algebra in eighth grade? that's claudia stuff!

Claudia was doing pre-algebra back in #2, wasn't she? Because she was supposed to figure out what x was, only she didn't care. That's pre-algebra, isn't it? Sorry if this is a stupid question -- obviously I can do those things, but it's been so long since I actually learned about them in school that I can't remember if it's actually considered pre-algebra.

Well, in #40 she's in "remedial math," so she seems to be going backwards. By high school, she'll be trying to learn her multiplication tables. That is, if she makes it that far.

She graduates in Graduation Day--well, she will, after some summer school.

Hang on, what's the difference between pre-algebra and algebra?

To be honest, Algebra is a load of nonsense. Who likes it?
You have to wonder which evil, sick-minded individual would make up such a thing. I really don't understand what schools think they're doing by teaching students this stuff. Don't get me started on 19th century literature- Nobody speaks like this anymore.
Slight rant over! ;D
Wouldn't Sending Claudia back be sort of like a last resort?
Wouldn't it make much more sense to set up an after school program for those struggling early in the year- and go over last years work so they can feel more at ease with the work this year?
It made no sense in turning around and threatening 'you've got 2 weeks'- If anything this is panic a student.
Either way, the teachers and parents lost claudia the minute the Kishis' gave into Claudia's manipulation tactics.(That whole depression thing when at that school)

I don't think it makes any sense that Claudia would be taken down a grade. I mean, she passed seventh grade. It would certainly make sense to keep her in middle school longer, but I don't think anyone actually gets put back in a grade they've already passed through.

If BSC parents pay their kids to babysit their siblings then why not pay Janine to tutor Claudia? It seems as if those tutoring sessions are not that helpful because Janine gets impatient easily, and Claudia gives up easily. Maybe money would have given Janine enought of an incentive to make the tutoring sessions work better?

I think it was partially because Claudia resented Janine having to tutor her in the first place, so she never would have been happy anyway. More reminders that she's not the smart one.
Why wasn't Claudia held back sooner? She was sent to that other school around 4th grade, and then sent back to 7th grade. Nothing in between? They barely let you go to 4th grade without knowing your multiplication tables these days, yet Claudia was still struggling with that in 7th grade (her first time through). Stoneybrook's education system is messed up.

Or maybe the ghostwriters are so old they don't remember when kids are supposed to learn stuff, so that' s why there are all this crazy inconsistencies. Although that doesn't explain why Claudia wasn't held back earlier--just why she was learning algebra in one book and fractions in the next.

I've gotta agree with Claudia and say I've always hated math word problems. They always had extra numbers in there that had nothing to do with anything and were hard and annoying. I'm so glad I'm out of school, lol.
Funny how she always said she was especially bad in math and science and spelling. That's pretty much everything you learn in 8th grade. Somehow I doubt she was a geography wiz.
