I think when Mary Anne is described as "mousy," the description is primarily capturing her quiet, timid personality, not her hair color. I specifically recall her describing her own hair as "'mouse-brown" in Logan likes Mary Anne. True...but "mouse-brown" can be dark as well. Remember also that Mary Anne didn't have a lot of self-confidence, so she thought of herself, including her physical appearance as mousy. She's clearly a brunette with dark brown hair and dark brown eyes on almost all the book covers, in most of the book descriptions and in the 1995 BSC film. In the 2020 Netflix series, her hair is black. In fact, when I first read the BSC series, I thought Mary Anne had black hair because her hair was always so dark on the cover illustrations. It's pretty plain in BSC canon that Mary Anne is no fair-haired, blue-eyed gal.

^ we can picture her anyway we want. I used to picture her with light brown hair all the time and fair coloring. She is mentioned to look alike Kristy too.

My point is, we can picture her however we want if things arenโt specified. The book covers are never accurate descriptions. I really like Malia Baker as Mary Anne and she does a great job! But did I picture her as white as a kid? Yes.

I thought "mousy" just meant flat(as in color, not volume) with no real natural highlights. It could be any shade of brown.
I would not base my images of these characters on often crazy looking cover art.

But did I picture her as white as a kid? Yes. Actually, it is specified in many books, eg, Mary Anne and Miss Priss that Mary Anne has dark hair, not light hair. I agree that Malia is wonderful as sweet, quiet Mary Anne. It could be any shade of brown. I would not base my images of these characters on often crazy looking cover art. I remember specifically in Mary Anne and Miss Priss, Mary Anne herself narrarates that she has dark hair and brown eyes. None of the books ever describe Mary Anne as having light hair.

I was referring to the definition of the word mousy. I don't care what shade of brown her hair is.
