Well, I kind of think the lack of showers is more logical than that. It is boring to read about. It's the same with tv shows or other books, movies, or whatever other storytelling medium. We don't know ever detail of their day. We can safely assume they are showering (or taking baths), without knowing about it. I don't need to know how or when they shower, I read the books for the story, and showering isn't really relevant.
I don't know if there was any particular "let's not have the adults live together before marriage" discussion and people saying that it should be presented this way because that's my beliefs. I tend to think of the books as presenting the most common way of thinking during the time period they were printed. I have a feeling that if they were written now, there would be some changes in relationships. This is my opinion though, and I'm not trying to force my viewpoints on anyone. (not entirely true. I do think that the world would be a better place if people would stop trying to force other people to believe in the things they do, like abstinence only and "intelligent design/creationism. Its fine if you do, but I believe in science and fact. I would like for my kids to not be exposed to religious propaganda in a public school. Thats something for parents to teach their kids, if they choose.)

Er, I'm using You in a general sense, not directed at any specific person.
And the BSC...

^ Agree about the showers. The living together was brought up a long time ago on another thread. Sorry I brought it up again. ;D My views are very different from most people on here's and I'm just going to drop these subjects because I think things are getting too personal and into too much politics. ;D I just want to talk about the BSC books. ;D Agree everyone's choice is their choice.

^Sorry. I tend to bring politics into everything I do, touch, look at, and think about. That's just me though, and I give you permission to tell me to shut up once in a while. I like that the BSC isn't too puberty heavy, actually, because I remember my parents getting into this huge fight when I read Are you There God, it's me Margaret. My dad didn't want me to know about any of that (he's religious, and we do not get along) and my mom was like "she needs to know". And since I was in the car, I remember it, and I ended up being really embarrassed about all things period for a long time. Which is just weird, because it's natural, and no kid should be embarrassed about their body. I'm glad the sitters didn't talk about it, because I probably wouldn't have read them, then, and then I wouldn't have found this board to kill hours of my time.

Penny Lane, I agree with you that if the books were written now, the relationships would have changed a lot! I also agree that reading about showers would be really boring and it is safe to assume that they all do, since no one complains about them smelling bad.

I actually agree with you, aln--i don't think the bsc should present any kind of viewpoint on these issues--although ed was planning on moving in with samantha. I don't think anyone should be criticized for not wanting to have sex, nor do i think that anyone who is mature and ready for it should be criticized for having it.
You guys, they did take showers in the books!!!!!

Not as often as one would hope in 20 years of eighth grade. I don't think they present a particular viewpoint, as much as reflecting the thinking of the time they were printed. I do think that having ed move in with samantha was something that the books might have done as to give more girls in stacey's position something to identify with -- showing different types of families, etc, asking the eternal question of Kristy and the Mother's Day Surprise, "What makes a family?" I also don't think anyone should be criticized for their choices regarding sexual activity. Anyone. But we live in a world where that is all too common, and as someone who grew up in a very religious community I tend to go on the defense / attack first, when I suspect someone might be judging me for my actions/beliefs. So I'm sorry if I was a little harsh.

Maybe the showers they do mention are just uninteresting that we don't remember them. I think that it is good that they mention things for everyone in the books, it helps all people connect with at least one character at one time, in different situations. It helps you understand that you are not the only one that is going through a similar situation.
Penny Lane, I don't think either aln or I meant to make it seem like we are judging you if thats where you got the suspicions, and I am sorry if my words made you feel as though I was. I don't think any less of anyone who has different beliefs/actions than I do. I also do not think you were being harsh, just sharing your opinion on the matter.

As for the showers, I wasn't bothered by it at all and didn't even notice. I was basically responding to Janey with a few earlier posts because I know this really bothers her that it's not mentioned. Speaking of this makes me think that I know a guy who is VERY clean and would be so bugged by no mention of it. He actually takes like 3 showers a day and me and my friends used to joke that we'd better be really careful about not smelling when we were around him because he could do the "secret sniff" that he had invented and catch B/O from a mile away. This reminds me of the BBO episode of Seinfeld, now. ;D

^ Glad to hear there is someone else out there who is willing to save themselves for marriage. ;D I support abstinence only but do agree that safe sex needs to be taught because, unfortunately, people won't wait for whatever reason. It's sad we even have to discuss this on here or anywhere.... Perhaps the ideal thing would be if safe sex is discussed, but sex outside marriage is heavily discouraged on the bases of the emotional and physical entanglements, etc. I mean clearly, thoroughly discouraged. I waited (married almost 4 years now), and being Christians we believe unwaveringly that any non-marital sex is wrong, but you can't teach it that way in a public school. You can strongly discourage doing it, though.

^i don't see why marriage needs to be emphasized... just no judgements, here's the facts on how to have a healthy sexual life. that would be my ideal, although this is common from pretty much the complete opposite perspective of yours. ;D
haha my boyfriend didn't really know how to use deoderant until i taught him... he was like "why do i have stank?" and i was like well you need to use deoderant every day, not just occasionally. ;D

^ I knew a kid who didn't know to use deodorant until my mom "suggested" nicely to his dad that he should use some (kids were starting to make fun of him. I know he smelled but I really felt for him because kids can be cruel....). His dad said "I don't use deodorant. Do I smell?" My mom was like ahhh! Don't get any closer! ;D

I recall having a tour guide in Italy who, well, clearly didn't use it either....

^ I don't think a lot of Europeans do (based on experiences at Disney ;D). Of course, lots of Americans don't either. ;D
