There's a whole Sweet Valley T&F book dedicated to it, and the girls are twelve. So I think the BSC could have mentioned it.

I was never bothered by the puberty subject being absent from BSC. As much as I enjoyed reading Judy Blume, I hated hearing about people getting their periods (still do) and thought it was unnecessary. I figured that it just happened behind the scenes, similar to the way it never says " 'Be right there!' Claudia shouted from the bathroom down the hall, where she had been for quite some time. 'Start the meeting without me!' " or anything like that.
I was 12 when I got mine, and it happened on New Year's Day, which was kind of weird. I had never heard of it until Family Life unit in 4th grade, and I remember going home to my mom and basically going "W...T...F! I'm going to WHAT out of WHERE?!?!?!?!" and dreading it for years. Actually, I bet one of the BSC girls would have a story similar to mine-- I was playing with my 4-year-old neighbor when it happened, and I had to run to the office where she was working and hand him over to her because I had to go home and couldn't watch him anymore. I suffered for years before I finally discovered the Diva Cup (I am proud to say I'm a total Dawn) and now it's a minor inconvenience instead of the major uncomfortable week from hell that it used to be in middle and high school. The worst part by far, though, was how my mom always told me "when you get your period, you'll stop growing". She was 12 and 5'8" when that happened, and she is still 5'8". I was 12 and 6'0" when that happened, and I was 6'4" by the time I was 17. NOFE AIR.

Yep, I definitely think there should've been a little more easing into the liking boys and having boyfriends thing, and passing mentions of cramps, etc.

I think Stacey would have definitely gotten her period first. Then Dawn. I could actually imagine Kristy getting her period before the rest of the BSC members. Then Claudia, Abby, and Mary Anne. Mallory and Jessi would probably be the last ones to get periods since they're younger and all.
I got my first training bra when I was nine. I was horrified and I didn't want a bra at ALL. It wasn't until I was eleven before I started getting used to wearing a bra. I got my first period when I was almost fifteen. By the time I got it, all of my friends got theirs by the time they were 11-13. I never really cared about being a late bloomer. I was actually glad because I knew periods were awful.

It was sort of implied that Stacy had hers. In Stacy and the Mystery of Stonybrook she mentions her body going through 'changes' that have made her blood sugars go out of control. As she already filled out her bikini I can only assume they meant her period. Also maybe I might be reading too much into it Claudia mentions that Mary Anne ran to Mimi for skinned kness and all her problems. SO possibly that was one of the things Mary Anne went to Mimi about. I think Claudia may have started around 6th grade Kristy does mention in Kristy's Great Idea that they are not as comfortable around her because she wears a bra and has grown up so much

I don't see Kristy getting hers early at all since she was behind in developing. I definitely see Stacey, Claudia and Dawn getting theirs at around 11-12, Mary Anne 12-13 and Kristy maybe not until even 14. Abby would have gotten hers the earliest, maybe even around 10.

I think if the BSC books hadn't kept such a squeaky clean, innocent vibe (many of the girls were reading them at age 7 and probably didn't even know what a period was), there could have been an episode when one of the girls gets her period for the first time at Sea City while as a mother's helper and tries to use tampons and fails and then has to spend the next few days trying to explain to the little Pikes why they can't go swimming with them.
I'd imagine that all the girls except for maybe Kristy got it by the end of eighth grade. Jessi probably not (dancers tend to start significantly later average). Mallory: I'm leaning 50/50 by the end of sixth grade.

I got mine at 11 on Memorial Day weekend. That sucked big time.
I have to agree that most of the girls got theirs already. Mallory would probably get hers before Jessi and Kristy though.

Here's what I think the order of which girls would get their period:
Abby: age 10/11
Dawn: age 11/12, before seventh grade
Claudia: summer before seventh grade or beginning of seventh grade
Stacey: age 12/13, seventh grade or beginning of eighth grade
Mary Anne: age 13, towards the end of the series
Mallory: age 11, towards the end of the series like before boarding school or during
Kristy: age 13, during Friends Forever
Jessi: not until she's a late teen, age 15 or 16

I got mine age 10, exactly a month before my 11th birthday. I was on holiday with my mom and brother with no immediate access to pads. (By that I mean, I had to wait several hours, not several days or something, but that was bad enough). I think it would have been nice to see a subplot on Mal or Kristy getting their first period... Before I got mine, I was really scared of it (can't deal with blood and the whole thing just seemed awful to me), not looking forward to it as some girls were, and the BSC would surely have been calm or happy or something about the whole ordeal. It might have helped me with my anxiety! I don't think it would have been out of line as these are things girls think about, and some get periods as young as age 9.

I can remember Mallory bursting into tears and having awful PMS. Stacey will be like, "I am extremely sophisticated and mature because I have periods." And Dawn will be considered an individual because she'd get her period early. Abby would make up terrible puns about periods for sure. If there was a BSC book about one of the girls' first periods I hope that Peter Lerangis wouldn't write that one

The only thing is, how would it have been handled? Would it have been a regular chapter 2 thing, ie: "Dawn is a real individual. She has her own style that we like to call California Casual. She was also the first one of us to start her period! Claudia wasn't far behind, but I'm still waiting for mine." Or would it have been a subplot (I can't imagine it being a main plot in a BSC book!) where one of the girls starts hers? Or just.. the girls randomly discussing it, like Stacey mentioning she has cramps or something? Either way, I don't think it's too odd that it was never mentioned. I mean, maybe a passing mention here or there (the cramps thing) would have been cool, but I just think that AMM wasn't interested in taking the books in that direction. IMO there's quite a difference in saying "Stacey fills out her bikini really well" and diving into the period issue. LOL@"a regular chapter 2 thing". Can you imagine if Judy Blume's version of chapter 2 if she had written a long running series about middle school girls?

I wonder if the BSC girls would use Teenage Softiesbrand that Margaret and her friends also used?
