I guess they both know lots of people! And Kristy says she and her brothers were allowed to invite friends, so the BSC was there. Also, in a huge WTF moment, Jamie Newton was there too. Kristy says he calls out "Hi-hi!" during the wedding. Like, what? Why are the Newtons there? I guess since they're neighbors with the Thomases, maybe they're family friends? I think they were family friends - Elizabeth was "on call" to watch Jamie if Mrs. Newton went into labor when the girls were at school/in the middle of the night, so (I think) that indicates they were pretty close. Now that makes more sense! Other option was one of the girls was stuck babysitting him since the Newtons are always calling for a babysitter XD

Why on earth would the Fieldings leave their kids with strangers? They didn't even know the BSC.
Kristys snarky comment to her mom really pissed me off -she actually said " What do you need money for? You're marrying Watson." Just because Elizabeth was marrying a rich guy didn't mean she was after him for his money or anything. Kristy was an idiot in this book.

That comment is way out of character for Kristy. She wants her mom to be financially independent. If I'm feeling snarky that's the kind of comment I would make though.

I just finished this book for my blog and Kristy kind of said it in a knee-jerk way after she told her mom to sell their house to someone else and Elizabeth said "I don't think anyone else will offer us this much money." Then when Kristy said she's marrying Watson, Elizabeth explained she didn't want Watson to feel obligated to pay for things for her kids. I think this book holds the record for largest amount of characters we never hear from again

This is very green. This is cute. ETA: Old fashioned, but cute. Some title translations. Kristy's are pretty literal so far: A big day for Gertie Christine and the big day A great day for Valerie Kristy at Her Mother's Wedding

The French covers are all about the saturated skies. They made it look like sunset at every time of day.

The first one you'd have no idea a wedding was going on.
Between that last one and some of the reprint covers, you'd think the illustrators never read the book. The bridesmaid and flower girl dresses are yellow! In one of the reprints they gave Karen a pink dress.

I wasn't a big fan of this one as a kid (I'm not very interested in weddings and also don't like kids. Weird that I like the BSC, I know), but as an adult, I appreciate it a lot more. The baby-sitting was actually fun to read. The development of Kristy and Watson's relationship is one of my favorite aspects of the series and I think it was very well-done (even in later books).
I bent her over Kristy arriving at the meeting at 5:36. I know this is dumb since at this point Kristy wasn't a major stickler for being on time, but it reminded me of managers I've had who'd scold you for being even a little late, but they were often late. I know, I know, it's petty, but it just bugged me haha. I wonder when the Look stuff started? Honestly, she should've been easier on Jessi. Poor girl had no control over being on time. But I digress.
In the Kindle version, they're actually paid $200 each. There is no way in heck that's enough for 40 hours of childcare, but I can see how that could be a lot for 13 year olds. Sam made me laugh when he offered to watch ALL the kids for a lower rate (in the Kindle it's $800. Honestly, that's still not enough lol. Although it's more than many childcare workers make).

In the book Elizabeth points out she's only charging slightly more than their usual rate. Even for 1987 prices, the BSC was charging pennies to babysit! I don't have the book on me so I can't check but it was definitely around 2 or 3 dollars an hour? I don't know what my parents paid sitters (which would have been around the same time, I was a baby when this book came out) but that's like nothing!

If that's more than they're making baby-sitting, that is SAD. I've noticed many baby-sitting jobs in the series are 2 hours. That's almost not worth it! Do the Pikes for example have to charge more, or is it the same regardless of the amount of kids? I don't know if this is ever specified aside from needing more sitters for more than 4 kids.

Minimum wage in 1987 was $3.35. $3.35 x 40 hours = $134. They were getting a big bonus at $200 per girl.

In the original, it was just $120 per girl. Honestly, putting it into perspective like that, that's not awful considering it's under the table and they're 13. I would've thought that was a lot at 13 as well (then regretted everything when I actually started working lol). I forgot that they actually got a $25 bonus as well. Not sure how much the bonus originally was.

I remember getting $20 in birthday cards and feeling like that was a lot of money at that age, lol. I wouldn't have been able to fathom getting over $100 at 13 and this was in the late 90s.

Wow, no wonder this series appealed to so many of us. Baby-sitting looked luxe.
