I think Claudia was wearing a pair of push down socks on the cover of Goodbye Stacey Goodbye but I'm not exactly positive that's what those are. That's how I always pictured them, though.

Count me in as another one who thought Carolyn's outfit sounded awesome! Also, I push down ALL my socks....so I just thought of push-down socks as looking like mine.

I just read this one and thought "huh?" about Mr. & Mrs. Arnold wanting a sitter when they went to a car show. The only reason I can figure out is that the girls had a rehearsal and a project in the middle of the day, because otherwise there would be no reason not to take them. Car shows are pretty kid-friendly, especially kids old enough to understand "look but don't touch". I've been to enough to have seen lots of children at them.
The funniest instance of this: Last spring my dad was showing his LaSalle at Winterthur, one of the museums that was/is a DuPont property in Wilmington. DD and I went with him, and we were behind this 1918 Cadillac as we drove onto the property. We had to wait for someone to direct both my dad and the other driver as to where to park, and while we were waiting the other driver got out to take a look at Father's car. It turned out that he was the current patriarch of the DuPont family himself, Irenee (pronounced "ear-in-ay"). Well, on the show ground, there were signs saying "do not touch" at all the cars- but Mr. DuPont had people up in his car, picked up kids to peek in, standing on the running board, you name it. Hey, if it's on your family's own property, you can do whatever you like!

Even an oldest/only *can* get hand-me-downs, if there's a friend or cousin the right age.

One half of the Du Pont family is totally insane. There was a Du Pont who used to wear only hefty bags: big brown one as a skirt, smaller white one as a top. I grew up in the area and my parents used to see her at the grocery store.

Maybe they thought the car show wouldn't interest their two daughters? Who wants to try to buy a car when kids are whining about how bored they are and they are tired of standing and can we please go home now?

^ I was about to say the same thing. ;D I used to get dragged to RV shows (even though my dad just liked "looking to see what was available" ;D) and they were soooo boring. I always begged to go and stay at my grandma's or my cousins'. And you can go in RVs and I think those are a lot more fun to look at than antique cars (I have no interest in vehicles of any kind - just want something drivable and dependable ;D). In my opinion, at least. Also, maybe Mr. and Mrs. Arnold wanted a day of "alone time" to just enjoy without the girls. ;D So I can see many reasons, actually, that the girls wouldn't have gone - even if they didn't have the lessons.

Maybe it was like the bomber Elizabeth and Watson went to in SS14.

::shrugs:: Among car people (my family, my in-laws, me, but not my DH), classic and antique shows are of great interest.

^ To each his own. ;D I doubt you'd want to go to a Horse Expo, so I understand. ;D I can see it getting a bit long (if you go to something like that with my dad, he gets in very looooong conversations with people and you end up standing around waiting forever ;D) for any 7 year olds, though. (at least if their dads are like mine ;D)

Not if the dads are like mine (or the other car guys we know.) They love to explain things and let everyone look at everything.

I also loved Carolyn's outfit as a little girl. The funny thing is, I actually HAD a shirt with sparkly moon and stars! Except that mine was blue.
Does anyone think Marilyn kinda seems like a darker version of Charlotte Johanssen?

Both are quiet, smart kids but Marilyn seems meaner to me. A bit less insecure, too.
