But I only read it on Monday, so it's fresh in my mind!

One thing I've never, ever understood about this book: why did Claudia almost pass out when she was getting the third hole in her ear? She can't have been scared; she'd been through it before. Was she sick? Was it just some random plot point?

I think it was a random thing. Mallory and Jessi were so nervous and they were fine. Claudia was all cool and nearly passed out. It was probably to show that it's OK to be nervous about things, even the cool kids get scared.

^good point. The junior officers were still a little in awe of the 8th graders at this point.

This book used to be one of my favorites!
Regarding the ear piercing, I had 2 holes in each ear when I was 11, and 3 holes in each ear when I was 13. When I had the 3rd holes done, I thought about how jealous the BSC would have been. ;D
I also loved the shopping trip too. I always loved reading about the BSC "malling" trips. ;D

They seemed to have so much fun together whenever they went malling ;D. This mall trip and the Mal/Jessi one in Mallory on Strike are my favorite mall trips to read about .

^ Same here. I love all of their "malling" adventures, like the one in Stacey and the Missing Ring (I think that's the one where she and Dawn watch a pair of older women try on shoes that are way too small for them). The shopping trips in this book are some of the best, though. But I don't think I'll ever get over Mary Anne calling their pierced ears sexy!

I LOVE when they go to the mall together. It always sounded like fun. The mall trip in Missing Ring is my favorite.

There are the mall scenes in Karen's Cartwheel, as well!

For some reason, this is one of my favourite books although a few things really irk me.
Mrs Arnold makes me so very mad when she has a go at Claud for not making sure the right child went to the piano recital. As others have said how the hell do you expect people who don't really know the children to tell identically dressed identical twins apart?
I also really don't like the twins until near the end when Mallory figures out what their problem is.
The "dream on" comment when Mal says she wants to look 'human' always cracks me up, so nasty but unintentional!
On the ear piercing thing, I never quite got why there would be too much protest for an 11 year old to have them. I had mine pierced when I was 4, circa 1992-ish and many girls around my age had them done at a similar age.

I had mine pierced the first time when I was 9 months old. I never understood why it was so controversial either. The piano lesson thing always always bugged me! It wasn't Claudia's fault. It was Mrs. Arnold's fault for raising bratty kids!

The piano lesson thing always always bugged me! It wasn't Claudia's fault. It was Mrs. Arnold's fault for raising bratty kids! I just reread this one recently, and this bugs me more and more every time. I don't remember thinking it was unfair for Claudia to get the blame when I read this book as a kid, but I definitely do now. As for the ears thing...maybe some parents don't trust their children to take care of them properly during the first few weeks? Also, some parents say no to anything and everything when they don't have a good reason to say yes. My mom was one of them!

^The ear piercing never bothered me either. It was a huge deal for us to get pierced; maybe because I went to a private school with rules about what kind of jewelry we could wear?
