Yeah I think if Ann was writing the series today this book would have turned out differently. I don't think she would have had Wes drive Stacey anywhere!

Reading it now, I think that any 22-year-old guy with any sense (and who isn't a perv) would realize that driving one of his 13-year-old students around is a Bad Idea.

^ I agree.
you'd think he'd have better sense. I mean seriously, how could he think driving a 13 year old girl around would be a good idea?

Yeah sadly, society doesn't allow these things. Offer to drive a young girl and you're asking for a sexual harassment allegation!

I enjoyed reading this but I can't believe that Stacey was so naive as to think that she and Wes could be in an actual relationship when she's only 13. I have to give Stacey credit for having the guts to give Wes the letter. If I had a crush on a teacher, I would never be able to do that.

Plus Wes was merely a student teacher, a substitute of sorts. SMS didn't really know him from anyone aside from his credentials. Surely unless he was truly dense even early on he had to be aware of Stacey's inappropriate feelings toward him. He should have dealt with it right from the start. If he didn't know what to do he could have turned to Mr. Zizmore, Mr. Kingbridge or even Mr. Taylor (who lol seemingly did not too much at SMS). Heck he could have without naming names asked a fellow colleague for advice. No way should he have done nothing especially after the poem!
In high school I had a crush on a teacher. Like Wes he was also blond, blue eyed and I thought very good looking. He was neither the best of teachers nor of people since at times he verbally was sexist but I admired his views on environmental issues. I never gave him any poem or letter. When I was older, and was his T.A. I was able to intelligently tell him I admired him and why. By then the "crush" had lessoned. The strange, not too appropriate thing was, there was (at least one) other person, she was a year ahead of me, who openly had a crush on this man. He'd even walk her to her locker, wait for her there. He claimed to know that was not quite right but he did it anyway in fact he acted surprised that this other student's crush was blatant. Reminded me of a 13 year old Stacey would have flipped out in excitement if Wed had ever escorted her to her locker or spent much time talking with her. Memories!

^when i was a freshman in high school, one of the coaches slept with a senior. he was in boatloads of trouble, but since she was 18 at the time and it was consensual, he didn't lose his job. but lots of girls had major crushes on him (including me) and after the whole thing happened, everyone wanted to be the next girl.
i may be in the minority here, but i actually liked the poem. i thought it was sweet. i would never give it to a teacher though.

Re-reading a year on, I actually feel pretty sorry for Stacey this time around.
Though I still can't comprehend how she seriously thought there was any chance they could have a relationship with the age gap alone, regardless of him being her teacher. :/

You're not in the minority, I thought the poem was really nice, but so unlike Stacey since she's more of a math person.

My Corolla is now 21 years old and still in overall great shape. The only major issues are the a/c (it doesn't work) and that the driver's side door lock can sometimes be very hard to open. I probably should get it replaced.
I am re-reading and think even more how wrong it was of Wes not to act sooner. Even when he did finally "talk to Stacey," I don't think (did he)? he ever said that her actions were inappropriate just that he was too old for her. It was a good thing none of the BSC "mean girls" (Cokie, Grace, etc) decided to take advantage of Stacey's obvious crush on Wes by making it known.
As for Elvira she sounded cute, but we didn't need for that to be the entire (except for Char) subplot! Oh and didn't this book make it sound like in order to (initially) go see Elvira, Stacey, Mary Anne, and Dawn had to walk across town? In Camp BSC and other books Mrs. Stone lives down the street from the Farmhouse.

I love the Elvira story and the goat - but good grief how many plays will the pikes put on! They should just have a permanent stage in their backyard.
Okay so......I have never shared this with another soul, but when I was a senior in High School I had a major crush on a brand new teacher. He was straight out of college and just gorgeous. All the girls were totally gaga over him. He was always overly nice to me and I remember reading a lot into it. Well, 3 years later I was in college and was visiting back home and saw him again. He asked me out and we went out to dinner where he admitted to having a crush on me.....I couldn't go out with him again b/c this creeped me out!
Reading this book reminded of that and how crazy that whole situation was!
I felt sorry for Stacey and I wonder what would have happened had I told my teacher that or written him a poem. It still grosses me out!

Your "secret" is safe with us Wiggirl, thanks for sharing. I am very glad the teacher did not try anything while you were his student. I probably would have flipped out had the teacher I had a crush on (at least the first year) ever shown any interest in me. I felt bad for Stacey, too, wasn't saying I didn't just that Wes should have handled things much better.
I actually thought Elvira trying to get under the slide with Adam was super sweet and I enjoyed the Pike play. I also liked that the triplets let Vanessa take charge and be the director.

^ I thought so. It also, depending on the size of Claire's old slide, painted Elvira as tiny. Later on like in Welcome to the BSC Abby, didn't (wasn't) she seem bigger? A little anyway. My goat knowledge is limited to being told by my Dad of a young goat that had the nerve to try and eat my sweater when I was very young.
