I don't find anything wrong with him sitting down since Stacey had made too many attempts by then. He ignored it at first but then addressed it. I think because he is a student teacher only though, he could have asked his supervisor to be with them (he may have if it wasn't at the dance) or mentioned it to him.

My mind was way in the gutter when I reread this one! At the end when Wes tells Stacey their age difference is way too much, I felt that he was talking about sex.
Also - Stacey had a day dream of her and Wes and a mossy bank...if you watch American horror story, the mossy bank was a reference by James Cromwell about a woman's private parts (the scene disgusted me b/c he's the dude from babe!).
I feel like later in life Stacey needs to read he's just not that into you, b/c it might help with her reading into every little thing that guys do.

I forgot that this is the one where Elvira the goat is introduced. I usually skim those chapters but I noticed something today. When Dawn takes the goat on a sitting job and it gets away and gets in the Goldman's garage and she and Jamie go knock on the door to apologize, the Goldmans invite them inside and feed the goat banana peels directly in their kitchen. That's so gross to me. I would not want a farm animal inside my kitchen where I prepare food for my family.

^I agree Scrounge. I also saw someone mentioned up-thread how Claudia specifically bought junk food for Elvira. I believe the goat only ate the wrappers, so Claudia really did throw food away.
I quickly re-read this last night and didn't get into it much at all. Wes on the cover looks more gaunt and angry/shifty than a hunk. Way back in the early 80's, I did think Tom Cruise was very good looking. Not quite "Farm Boy Wesley" hot but very handsome nonetheless. I don't see any resemblance between the two. A "new" thought I had this time was how strange it was that Wes took over the class when he did--last month of the year. If Mr. Zizmore had administered the class' final beforehand, graded were either in the book or pretty much so that would have been different. Since I am guessing Stacey's class was an advanced one, perhaps Wes could have shared a few concepts the kids would talk about the following year in Algebra. I don't think it was fair to either Wes or especially the class that the final exam review be all on him.

^ I assume it was that the food was still in the wrappers, and Elvira ate just the wrappers - with the food in it - therefore making it uneatable after. Just because I can't see Claudia throwing away food otherwise

I think that's cute. Claudia was probably thinking "I love Snickers, so Ms. Goat will too!". Haha, or what if she just brought it a big bag of all her candy wrappers to get rid of the evidence in her bedroom. That would be genius.

I was embarrassed for Stacey in this book, too. I had a crush on a student teacher once, but I hope I didn't act half as lame as she did. That said, I actually loved this book!

This book is so awkward, ridiculous and cringe-worthy that it's so good. At the end of it, Claudia tells Stacey that she thinks she did the right thing about professing her love and feelings to Wes. I'm curious as to what everyone thinks about this?!
Also, I could really relate to Wes in this one because I've had similar personal experiences. I mentioned earlier that I was a student teacher when I was 18 and the kids were about 10-11 (Grade 5). A few of the girls would even come to my house unannounced! I never had any situations like Wes experienced with Stacey, but I think it's partially natural for kids to develop a crush or a "like" on an older figure that is open and non-threatening.
In a way, I had to admire Stacey's balls. But sometimes she was really out there, the way her feelings and imagination floated away. Again, that's probably common. They should really re-write things though so it says, "Stacey's really sophisticated EXCEPT when there's a boy around or she's in LUV, then she acts like a loon."

Virgo - I completely get why Claudia supported Stacey. When you're 13, what Stacey did seems like a good idea. From an adult perspective, especially in this day and age, I don't think Claudia was right to do so.

I just finished this one again last night, and although it's a little bit creepy in some ways, I totally felt the way Stacey did on more than one occasion in my life. I did have a crush on a TA once, but I was in college and the age difference was only five years. (It ended about the same way Stacey and Wes did, though... oh well). One of my teachers in high school was brand new (I was 17, he was 22 or 23) and a lot of the girls (not me though) thought he was super cute. I thought he was too naive and not a good teacher. After I graduated, he got arrested for having, um, intimate relations with several junior girls... so that's what I always think of when I read this book now >_< I don't think Stacey should have told Wes how she felt, but I can see why Claudia thought it was the right thing to do. But man, can I empathize with the heartbreak at the end... I think everyone's gone through that sort of thing before. Poor Stacey, haha.

I think Claudia may have told her cause Stacey wanted some closure and Claudia probably wanted her to shut up LOL One thing I never figured out was whether Maureen knew about the crush or not, because I know she had picked up the dress for Stacey from Bellairs, and being close, I was surprised she didn't bring it up to her, or at least half the truth.
Around senior year, I think I crushed on a teacher too who looked young but did nothing about it, and totally thought the way he marked was unfair, so that was that.
