Reading this book in particular really takes me back. It's such a good one. One of the oddest beginnings, though, with that underwear song. I'm about halfway through listening to this book on Audible, and the underwear song is a really odd beginning to just hear out of nowhere when you don't remember that's how the book starts! One weird thing, though, is that the audiobook cuts out a couple of lines from the "Mr. Johnny Rebeck" song. It's supposed to be something like "All the neighbors' dogs and cats will nevermore be seen / For they've all been ground to sausages in Mr. Johnny Rebeck's machine!" and it just... leaves that part out. So when Mallory says, "Oh, ew!" because she suddenly understands what the song is really about... there's no way the listener can understand what the song means because the dogs and cats aren't mentioned at all. I guess they thought it was too gross, but it's stupid to leave in the part about Mal thinking it's gross when there isn't any reason why. Not gonna lie, I am dying to hear how this sounds on audiobook! ^ maybe they decided the full lyrics were too gruesome? i had never heard of that song before and remember being really grossed out and disturbed when i read this part as a kid

I couldn't stand how someone always had to be ACTIVELY watching Claire. I can't believe the kids expected to be paid for spending time with each other. What sort of values did these Pike parents teach their kids anyway? None. Remember her parents are liberal parents which meant no discipline.

She looks nice from what I can see. Lol, that track suit and that hair. I like her bag. French Stoneybrook has graffiti everywhere. Titles: Tine’s big problem Hard times for Mallory

I re read this one a lot as a kid for some reason. I think most Mallory books are pretty good and actually a bit underrated.
I like how the Pike kids come together to try to save and earn money, how the BSC has Mal's back, and I even like the subplot (I do like the Delaneys, though. Some of the more interesting clients. I'm sad they moved). I'm sort of confused though... when is this supposed to take place? It's right after Mystery Admirer, which obviously took place in October, but it's warm enough to swim. This bothered me even as a kid! I guess I shouldn't think about it too much. I've noticed that there haven't been any "wintery" books in the 20s and 30s unless I'm missing something, aside from Winter Vacation obviously. I'm trying to make the time warp make sense and it's not working lol.
I agree with many commenters... it's very unrealistic that other kids would tease them for their dad losing his job. Especially Claire, who's in kindergarten. That's almost laughable. Claire was HAPPY at first because Mr. Pike would have time to play with her! Other 5 year olds really wouldn't understand the concept of losing a job at all. It's true that poor kids get picked on, but they weren't poor. The triplets getting teased for not being able to pay for a field trip is the only thing I can see happening. U guys it did make interesting drama.
The prank calls were great. I always wanted to troll someone like that when I was a kid, but was terrified I'd get in trouble (plus by the time I thought of it, it was the era of caller ID). Bart's calls to Moe on The Simpsons also played a part in this.
I feel like at this point, they all feel like close friends and it's really nice. I can't explain it. I envied them for that... I was a bit too weird to have more than maybe 2 close friends at a time haha.
