I was rather looking forward to it after seeing what others said about it but it seems rather hyped up after reading it. The fire safety tips alone kept ruining the feel. The best part was the very end but this too felt ruined by Dawn's inclusion. I think it would have been stronger had this been a moment soley for Mary Anne.

But, what happened to the passage?? Does part of it still exist?

^ Wasn't a lot of the passage underground? That's how I imagined it at least. And maybe the side of the house where it went up on the stairs wasn't too badly damaged. That's how I picture it - the whole house in a burned pile of rubble except the one wall where the passage remains. (maybe Jared's ghost saved it. ;D)

I don't even think I finished reading this book after the chapter where MA's house burns down. That was as far as I got before I freaked out about my house going up in flames. I also never knew that this was the last BSC book in the original series before FF.

^ This one freaked me out about my house burning down too. I still have bad dreams after reading it (which is probably why I've only read it twice).

Wow, this is one sad book! I finally checked it out from the library and...whoa. Poor Mary Anne! I felt so sad for her. I expected to have nightmares after I read it, but thankfully I didn't. I can't imagine what I'd do if that happened to me.

I just got this book (yay, it seems to be a hard one to find, and I got it for free off of PaperBack Swap) and wow, it depressed me. I kept thinking about how I would feel in Mary Anne's situation - I have so many things that have strong sentimental value that could never be replaced.
One thing that I found odd though was that she put Tigger down outside. You'd think she'd want to hold onto him in case he tried to run, either into the fire or away from it. It was the middle of the night, so he could easily have been hit by a car.

^Good point about Tigger. I'd have figured she'd hang onto him for dear life.
One thing I did like about this book was the charges banding together to finish the BSC's contest entry. How sweet was that?

^ Maybe Tigger was so freaked out he was scratching her. That would be motivation for me to put him down. ;D Just kidding - not a cat person but can't understand, either, why she put him down unless she was so distracted or he was too upset to hold. I also liked the charges finishing the entry. I always enjoy it when the charges show how much they like the BSC. ;D

^ I definitely wouldn't read it, then. ;D That is really ironic. Was it before or after this book came out? This book really depresses me because the BSC is ending and freaks me out about the fire. That is one of my biggest fears. Did Charlotte get the kids organized on entering the BSC in the contest? She seems to have a lot of good "Kristy-like" ideas. ;D

I just read this one for the first time and think it's one of the better ones of the later books. I didn't even know the series lasted past #105 until I found this board, so these ones almost feel like fanfic to me. I thought this one was really well-written - much more vivid and realistic than books like Memory Garden and Jessi's Wish, which feel like manuals on How to Deal with Serious Issues. There were lots of little details - the family standing in the kitchen and being able to look up at the sky, Mary Anne finding a fork and handing it to Sharon, etc. - that were quite poignant, and reminded me of the style of the first few books. I'm glad they ended the book on a somewhat bleak note - anything else would have seemed out of place.
I'm still irritated that they chose MA's house to burn down, though. I can understand why they did it - they needed a dramatic cliffhanger to end the series on, and you could probably assign some kind of metaphorical significance, too. But MA's house was so d**n cool! It had the secret passage way and the moulding and everything! Why not have Claudia's house burn down, for example? That would have had more relevance to the series as a whole, IMO - it would have meant that the Kristy-Claudia-MA triangle from the beginning of the books was now completely gone. It was the only house Claudia had ever lived in, and, as all her possessions would have been destroyed, it would have meant we'd have got some reminiscing on Mimi, who played a pretty big part in the series considering how short a time she was part of it. And, because the club's HQ, it would have been a great metaphor for the club breaking up (and growing up), which is what the FF series is meant to be about.

^ Agree Claud's house burning would have brought a whole new issue into it. Never thought of that. This one scares and depresses me so much that I truthfully can't get past that to see the details or how well it's written. Definitely my least favorite BSC book but I can see how you might like it if it doesn't depress or scare you like it does me. ;D
