apparently it was based off of something that really happened.

I can't believe how worked up the parents got at the meeting! Cindy Sherwood telling Sharon shes an unfit mother for feeling proud about what Dawn and Mary Anne were doing; the adults shouting at each other. And then those letters saying that the kids who didnt support school spirit month would grow up not caring about anything, or feeling like they didnt have to obey rules or whatever. Poor Claudia getting her mural ruined, but I had no sympathy for her after she snapped at Mary Anne "Like you'd care" about the mural. Even though they were on opposite sides of this "war", Mary Anne would be the last person to gloat over something like that. I dont see why the kids would get so worked up about some kids not participating in school spirit month anyway. Those people needed to relax. I thought it was silly to have a whole month for school spirit. I know classes wouldnt have been interupted everyday for activities, but it would have slowed down the teaching a lot. And I like Dawn's solution in the end so the students only had to participate in the activities if they wanted to. Anyway enough ranting about this book

^ I liked Dawn's solution, too (at least what I remember it being . ;D) I think my favorite part of this book was the interaction between Richard and Sharon. Isn't this the one where he teases her about "starting the riot"? ;D I like it when Richard shows his lighter side. Who was the ghostwriter of this one?

Dawns solution wasn't a solution at all. It was the same way at the beginning of the book - voluntary.
I think it was Suzanne Weyn. Her books are usually pretty good, if i recall correctly. She did this one, and Dawn's Big Date, and ... Mary Anne's makeover? I'm not entirely sure.

^ Thanks. Couldn't remember how it was to start with at the school but voluntary sounds like the best way for something like that. As I said, can't remember much about this one - I think I block it from my mind. ;D

Oh yeah, I guess solution was the wrong word. I like that they resolved to have a compromise then, after having such a blow out about non participants, than just leaving it hanging, with one side "winning" and one side "losing."

Ah man, I would have loved to be there. It's the perfect excuse to let off a lot of energy and go nuts protesting and stuff. Go Dawn!!

I like that "solution" too in that it was a compromise. I don't like books that leave things totally unresolved. ;D

But it wasn't a compromise. It was the exact same arrangement that it was at the beginning of the book. The only difference is that now students weren't supposed to harass the non-participating students. Which should have been the case at the beginning of the book, but apparently all the teachers forgot to pick up their common sense with their degrees.

^ That seems to happen a lot. ;D I don't know about the compromise (was just responding to icequeen saying it was ;D) as it's been a while since I've read this one. I just know I like books that tie things up but maybe this one really didn't.

After meeting some of the people who were teaching majors at EMU, I fear for the future of education in this state/country. But that's neither here nor there. (what a stupid cliche, it doesn't even make sense!)
Well, half the school magically changed their attitude. It just bothered me, because one minute they are screaming at each other and the parents are saying that people who don't have school spirit are going to end up teen mothers and pregnant, and then a week later they are like "oh, well, we can still have spirit week. be nice to each other." and everyone just changed. It didn't make any sense to me.

Poor Logan. No one gave a hoot about his stupid baseball team. Were there no other spring sports teams to cheer on as well?
Even though Kristy and Claudia were little snots for the most part, I did like their take on pajama day. Kristy with the bed-head hairdo and Claudia all glammed up. That's the kind of stuff that makes school spirit celebrations fun. The people who don't participate get to laugh at the people who want attention anyway.
I laughed when Sharon said she got in a fight with that other mother at the meeting and Richard joked "Our old pal (whatever her name was) from high school?" I never really thought about the parents around town having a history together.

I think it's really wierd that JESSI was an antagonist (maybe not the right word) in this book. Technically she had just moved from Oakley that year, so I can't imagine she would have that much SMS pride. I know, insert your own time warp joke. Also I thought it was true to life that Dawn got caught up in the drama, almost by accident-much more so than her normal spearheading of a cause.

We have school spirit week during homecoming in my high school (well...before I graduated at least...they still have it now I do believe) and it's always been optional. If you do it fine if you don't fine. The book didn't seem realistic at all...making the news? Please.
