I think it's really wierd that JESSI was an antagonist (maybe not the right word) in this book. Technically she had just moved from Oakley that year, so I can't imagine she would have that much SMS pride. I know, insert your own time warp joke. Also I thought it was true to life that Dawn got caught up in the drama, almost by accident-much more so than her normal spearheading of a cause. Perhaps Jessi was on the Pro-Spirit side because she has a lot of confidence. Also, Mallory and Mary Anne who are more reserved than Claudia, Jessi and Kristy, happened to be on the Anti-Spirit side (stemming to Pyjama Day where they think it's silly and don't want to do it as it draws attention to themselves)

it was apparently based on a real news article. Wow, you'd think that people would figure out to make it optional before it blew out of proportion. Some people have enough school spirit to make up for the entire school not being involved. I never really got the whole pajama day thing. I mean yes they are reserved and Mary Anne is really shy and they were worried about looking silly but nothing they wore would have drawn as much attention as some people actually attaching cribs to themselves (as some people did in the book). Not all eyes are on you girls, the whole school is involved. It irritated me a little bit. I also laughed at the irony when Dawn basically had her own anti-spirit "spirit rally".

^It was annoying because Mary Anne took it so literally. Like "You must wear exactly what you wore to bed last night to school today". She had a hissy fit because apparently her pj bottoms were thin enough that you could see her underwear through them. Did she only have one set of jammies? Nobody would know what she slept in anyway. For example, I don't know how many girls sleep in a bra, but I certainly don't. Were they all supposed to go to school bra-less on pj day? That might cause a riot, heh.

I went to a catholic school so on PJ day we were only allowed to wear flannel pants or sweat pants with not-so-thin shirts. Idk what the SMS kids did, but for PJ day all of us girls wore bras so maybe they did too. I remember the hissy fit MA made about her PJ's quite well and thought it was quite dumb; she could've used her baby-sitting money to buy a new pair of PJ's (like most of us girls did when PJ day rolled around because we never wanted to show up in something we actually slept in) or she could've worn sweats or something like that.

I don't really even care about who sees me in my PJ's. I bet when MA was thinking of her jammy problem, she was thinking of boys. So many boys have seen me in my PJ's and I don't care, really. She could've worn sweats easily, though. It bugs me sometimes how MA is so self-contious.

We never had a pajama day when I was in school. We did have days when we could wear slippers instead of shoes, which was fun. People would wear their craziest pairs. I would have loved to go to school in my pajamas, but then again, I'm not Mary Anne the Timid.

would people wear their slippers outside? that seems like it'd defeat the whole purpose of wearing slippers. i feel ganky when i go into the corridor of my apartment building in my slippers.

From what I remember, most people changed into them once they got to school. I had to ride the bus, and no way did I want my slippers getting dirty from the nasty bus floor!

I remember really being attracted to this book when I read it in elementary school. I probably read this book somewhere between 1995-1998 (3 years, I know, but I was into the BSC for awhile).
I tend to appreciate books that aren't all about Babysitting adventures. For me, they get pretty boring fast. I liked how it was set in SMS and focused more on school activities.
I also thought that this book was realistic for Dawn. She does have a bit of an attitude problem at times (I think not so much an attitude problem as stubborn. Perhaps it's trying to play on Dawn's 'individualism' in the fact that she is an individual and she doesn't want to participate in the 'sheep' activities at SMS)
Mary Anne looks cute on the cover. Dawn looks pretty granola.

I was thinking about it today, we never really had a pajama day at my school, I think that was because half the kids showed up looking like they were wearing their pajamas everyday anyways!

My high school had a pajama day in among the spirit week stuff most years; not my favorite but it got a lot of participation. I hated how kids would come to school in pajamas other times, both in high school and college. Just get dressed!
