She also makes an apperance in that chain letter book where they share secrets.
Anyway, I read this today and it was never my favorite as a kid, but as an adult I really enjoyed it. It seemed very realistic, as opposed to the other, later books.
I laughed out loud at Kristy's dog sitting dog when she says you haven't lived until you've had a dog step on your face.
Claudia was awesome on her sitting job. I actually use this technique working with adults with developmental disabilities and it was cool see one of the sitters using this.
I wonder why Kristy's mom's name changed from Edie to Elizabeth?

One of my favorite Kristy lines, haha. I like that Kristy dressed more like Mary Anne in seventh grade, and then slowly adopted her uniform...I wonder if Ann knew that people who wear the same thing every day tend to be more successful

^ It's likely she did since Kristy was the leader of the group. Reading this for the first time in over a decade brought me right back to my childhood. The events in the book seemed familiar but not at the same time. But that's probably because every book after this was a summary of what happened here. There were a few moments that made me laugh out loud, like Kristy thinking that Buffy and Pinky were kids and that their "mom" was cruel for locking them in another room, lol. I did like that Kristy made her peace with Watson before the end of the book. He seems like a nice guy who really loves her mom. She wasn't being fair to him but she knew that the whole time. She just didn't want their lives to change, which is understandable. It's especially scary at that age for your family to change. I think it also helped that she was forming the club and Claudia, who was starting to drift away from the group, was a part of that.

Admittedly Kristy hating on Watson for no reason was so frustrating. The way she called Stacey out on lying was pretty mild compared to what she could have done in later books and probably WOULD say. I had to laugh at the rules made while the Thomases were eating fondue.

That was the start of a great legacy and a wonderful epic.

This book is one of my very favorites. I read this before the summer of sixth grade. It was the second babysitters club book I ever read! I remember being so surprised when Kristy called Watson a terrible father! I’ve never forgotten that comment because I thought it was so mean.

I just re-read this book for the first time in years and I can't believe how well it stands alone unlike many other BSC books. I'll just jot down some basic thoughts and observations that struck me: - I like that overall, mostly everything is realistic unlike later books and the girls are not stereotypes of themselves; Kristy has a big mouth but is not yet an overly-controlling tyrant with the "uniform" of a turtleneck and jeans who gives "the look."
- The only thing that was not realistic was Kristy's blowup about Watson being a terrible father. That whole conversation escalated so quickly and was very cringe-worthy. It seems strange that she would be the only one to hate Watson, since both her older and younger brothers took to him so quickly. Is it ever really explained why it was only Kristy who had good memories of him?
- I also noticed what could be described as the first minor inconsistency - her unnamed father (not yet known as Patrick) is described as being married with another family, but in Kristy's Big News, it's implied that his marriage to Zoey was only his second.
- Now to my favorite thing: the cover. I absolutely love the original cover and I'm glad I somehow ended up with the 1986 version and not the 1995 reprint. The art looks really nice and not sterile and lower-budget like H.S. I'm not an 80s child, but there's just something very warm and nostalgic about the original art that is missing in the 1995 art. And at least the girls actually look 12 and not 30 like they would in later books (seriously, take a look at Stacey on some of the later covers!). I know that some people think it was a mistake that Kristy is wearing a dress, but she actually mentions wearing a jumper somewhere in the book.
- The one thing that I always found interesting about the original cover (and this has been pointed out in an old archived thread) is that the eye is automatically drawn to Stacy and not Kristy. She is positioned the highest and with her hand gesturing like that, she looks like the one explaining the great idea.
- I also like how the BSC was more of an actual club and less of a business in these really early books.
- I usually skip over the baby sitting chapters. However, I like that they are all semi-interesting and lead to the formation of certain BSC policies (i.e. writing in the notebook so other sitters know what to expect).

I don't speak French, but I assume that Stacey is saying "Everyone look at my butt in these jeans." Claudia can't possibly have an arm in that noodle sleeve. This is very cute but looks like a fan fiction shipper drawing.

Ok, there are TOO MANY different cover options. These are updated French ones similar to the newest US ones. Even animated French people look cooler. Although, Stacey is dressed like Peg Bundy. I like the little cat details on the curtain rod and mirror.

So, the first books obviously have the most translations. I'm not sure why everyone needed their own cover art! Sophisticated. I dig the parrot shirt. Not her best look. Who is the creepy girl on the bench? Funky.

More, because I can only put so much in each post. Super cute and everyone looks age appropriate. Is that a huge fish mural behind them? These covers all have a random thing with an arrow pointed to it. Pizza toast, I guess? Hello, Morbidda! They look like old fashioned dolls. Kristy's snow man shirt! Stacey's not wearing sheep. This picture is enormous. Get a good look, lol.

Stacey not wearing sheep is the worst thing about this cover. The second worst thing is that Mary Anne's a blonde (or maybe a redhead since it does look orange) instead of a brunette.

Love how Mary Anne's braids turn into hearts! I think they all look like dolls in the Portuguese cover.

Sharing this here too since I was home...when I met Ann Martin at a book signing, I brought this book to get it signed. Included part of my signature because I was definitely trying to be like Stacey
