I liked this book a lot when I was younger and it was a frequent re-read. I still like it, but it's not one of Mallory's better books. I actually liked that one of the subplots involved a regular client we rarely see, but I wanted to skim the other subplot because I just did not care at all. Lol.
As a kid I thought Dawn's solution was genius, but not so much now. Major risk. Blankie was already damaged, but she should've waited for Mrs. Marshall to come home before tearing it up. Glad it worked out, but I doubt this is realistic. For some reason, this subplot is vivid in my mind. Most of them aren't.
The weird thing is... my takeaway with this book is that it's kind of a bummer? I always feel bad for someone when they're really looking forward to something and are let down or even hate it. And she was so awkward, Jessi was snubbing her, and in the end she decided not to continue lessons (although I can't totally blame her. I really don't think she was ready for them). Yeah, I don't know, it's just sort of sad. Relatable, but sad.
It would've been cool for Jessi to take the lessons too, but maybe there'd be less of a story then.
Is anyone here a Bob's Burgers fan? I couldn't help but think of the episode "The Horse Rider-er" while reading this lol. Tbh, I also couldn't help thinking of this book while watching that episode! Tina and Mallory do have a lot in common now that I think about it.

Tina and Mallory are very similar, super awkward oldest siblings XD
You're right this book is kind of sad. Poor Mallory was so awkward and cringey as she tried making friends with the other kids in her class who had no interest in being her friend

I loved how Mal and Nina played Barbies together. I was obsessed with my Barbies for too many years. Mal doesn’t seem like the type to play with dolls but of course she must have with her younger sisters.

Somehow I didn't notice their similarities until I read this book, lol. I liked the Barbie part too! It was cute. I played with Barbies growing up too. I like when Claire mentions her Skipper doll because the one I had was my favorite for some reason.

I used to love playing with Barbies! My favorite was Teresa because she had brown hair. I just looked it up and apparently they had an Asian Barbie?! She never made it to my part of the world because I would have bought her in a heartbeat.

I remember Mallory picking out an outfit for her Barbie and saying Claudia would be proud because it was like a sweatshirt over striped leggings XD
