^They missed their opportunity for a very special death story when they cured cancer-girl Danielle instead of killing her off. I didn't care about her either, but at least they gave her two full books. They should have introduced her in Jessi's Wish and then killed her off in the second one.

I haven't read through this entire thread, so sorry if this has come up before.
I had this book when I was younger (again - my books were tragically ruined!), but I just bought a copy on ebay. Does anyone have a copy of this book that they bought right when it came out? Has the front cover tag line always been, "Amelia's friends will always remember her."? And on the back it mentions that Amelia is the one who died - has that always been what the back cover says?
I remember when I bought this book, I was excited to find out who died. I must have been reeaalllllly slow because I was anxious to see if it was a BSCer. I remember reading the back of the book to see what it was about and I don't remember it saying anything about it being Amelia - because if I did read that, I wouldn't have thought it was a BSCer.
Anyone?

I only have the new cover version and it does indeed say what you said. Lol, count me in as being "slow, too" because I was also worried it was a BSC member.

^This book was actually only published with the new cover I'm pretty sure Farewell, Dawn (88) was the last title sold in the old cover style. I also just checked my own copy; it's a first edition and does have the same front cover tag line and back cover description. And not to rub it in or anything but the bench in the cover illustration also says "in loving memory of Amelia Louise Freeman"

I thought it came in the new cover, but I thought maybe they redid the front and back wordings. I saw the plaque on the bench too. I'm not sure what I was thinking when I was a kid. Maybe I had heard about the book and thought it was a BSCer, but realized it wasn't after I looked at it. Maybe I just have my memories mixed up.

I just dumbly got sucked into holding my breath that it wasn't Kristy. I was so happy it wasn't. Perhaps I did so because that was the first book where Mary Anne (and Kristy, too for that mstter) truly showed how much their friendship means to one another. Also, and forgive me for sounding mean to Amelia, but the way MA and really SMS was worked up, the "mood" also made it feel like the death was of a more heard of character.

I was thinking it was Kristy, too. She was my favorite when I was a kid, so that would have been devastating for me! I reread this book last night and this morning and it always makes me cry. I wasn't sobbing, but I sure teared up!
I wonder why no one else thought of having some kind of memorial at the school. When I was in middle school, there were a few trees lined up on the main walkway with plaques dedicating them to students who had passed away. Has no student at SMS ever died before?

^Mr. Taylor, the principal, didn't do much, did he? I think Mr. Kingbridge, the VP, was more active and known throughout the Series. I would think that Mr. Taylor would have had more of a role in this one and eventually asked the family/offerred them (even asked the students for ideas) of what if any memorial they would feel comfortable with.

Now that I think about, I don't remember my principal doing anything either. It seemed like it was the VP. Our VP was the one in charge of discipline though, so maybe that's why the students knew him more!
We had a student commit suicide when I was in 7th grade. I was really angry because they weren't going to do any kind of memorial for him because they didn't want to seem like they were condoning suicide. .

^ when i was in high school, six students died, but the only one who ever got a memorial was a boy who committed suicide. (he was a coach's son and he was popular.) another kid was injured pretty badly in a car wreck, and since he was also popular he got a page in the yearbook and tshirt sales to pay for his hospital bills and stuff. but none of the other kids who died ever got any sort of recognition.

^That's awful. :/ Lesser note, when I was in 7th Grade, one random morning, some guy (I never saw his face) decided to slam my head against my locker, breaking my nose. The principal did nothing. She basically said "I'm sorry, but we have no way of knowing who it was, etc." I am not a fan or advocate of suing, especially these days when it seems like there are people who will press charges for anything. However, in retrospect, many moons later, I wish my family had done more to at least raise awareness of senseless acts of violence. I still hold a grain of bitterness because my junior high years in general were so awful. I know that's part of why I love the BSC--to vicariously read about more positive middle school years then my own.

^Wow! What a horrible person! I'll never understand why kids are so mean.
We had 4 or 5 kids die when I was in high school. I think one was suicide and two were best friends that died together in a car wreck (I think alcohol was involved). I can't remember how the others died. I don't remember if there was a memorial at my high school or not. I think there were special features in the year book, but no trees or plaques that I can remember.

omg zoar that is awful! You poor thing And yes, junior high is pretty terrible. I substitute teach and don't know how those teachers do it day in and day out. I'm glad I had the BSC to turn to when I was at that age and frustrated with how 7th/8th grade was turning out!

Thank you everyone very much, hugs. The guy had no clue who I was (I don't think), he just happened to be walking past my row of lockers and decided to take out some morning aggression? Who knows? All I know is a couple days later I had to have surgery. I was lucky no major damage was done. Ever since I have had minor sinus type issues at times. And at the time, that incident only made PE more horrendous an experience but that's another story.
I don't know how Junior High teachers do it either, BooBoo. More power to the good and caring ones out there such as yourself.
