While I can relate to Amy, I always felt bad for Dawn and Sharon and Mary Anne, who just wanted her to have a good time while she was there. I think if I was in Amy's position, after awhile I would want to be nice to them for being nice to me and have some sort of fun while I was there.

^Exactly! I mean, they really tried to make her feel at home and included her in everything.

I agree and also felt for the Spier/Schafers (including Richard who got her the bike ;D) but blame Amy's parents more than anything. I probably would have found a tactful way to say "no, you can not dump your child here on us." ;D

I agree that Amy did act like a brat for too long. It was 3 whole weeks and you'd think that she would at least get into some sort of a routine after a while. Although I definitely can relate to her. Like I said, I loved being at home in my comfort zone with my family and never felt extremely comfortable being away from them, even if it was only for a night. The idea of being separated from them for 3 whole weeks with strangers would have scared the hell out of me.

^ I agree and feel the same about being scared. Glad to know I'm not alone. ;D Does anyone know how far Bellaire's is from the Shafer/Spier house? I always assumed it was quite a ways.

I can also agree that I would have been terrified at that age. When I was around that age (or maybe a little younger) I tried to stay at my aunt's house, whom I knew quite well and saw every weekend. It was just for a night. But my parents had to come get me - I can't remember if I wouldn't go to bed, or if I DID go to bed but woke up crying. Either way, I couldn't stay there. I also always thought that Bellair's was kind of far from the Schafer's house. I guess it wasn't that far, however, since Stacey could ride bike there. Kind of a big coinky dink that she ended up there, however, right to Stacey... ;D oh well

^ I had the exact same thing happen to me at my aunt's house. ;D My parents had to drive about 45 min to meet her halfway to pick me up at about 11 pm. ;D Can't imagine staying with strangers..... As for the geography of Stoneybrook, like I said in the inconsistencies thread, it baffles me too much to think about. ;D

I didn't like this one. I hated Stacey's friends. I have grown to dislike Stacey over her books before this one so I didn't sympathize with her either. My mom was just like Stacey's with the job thing. It was a combination of not wanting me to sit on my butt all summer and starting to make me pay for my own stuff. I worked every summer from 15 on. (It was legal at 14, so I got one extra summer off, thanks Mom!)
I had to laugh when the girls came over to watch the VHS tape full of U4Me stuff because I made those same kinds of tapes and watched them over and over. If I had YouTube back then I don't think I would have ever left my house.
Personally I wish the BSC had been like "No thanks. We're good without you." to Stacey. I don't think Stacey saw the light about how great her BSC friends were, she just didn't want to be without anyone.

I don't think Stacey saw the light about how great her BSC friends were, she just didn't want to be without anyone. I never thought about it like that until you brought it up, but I agree. Stacey didn't really value any of her friends, she just valued not being alone. She's kinda always been like this because even as a kid Laine and her NY friends treated her like crap, and she knew it but stuck with them regardless until THEY ditched HER. I think that had Laine and the gang mercilessly teased her but allowed her to still be part of the group, Stace would have taken the abused and stayed "friends" with them. I have to say that Stacey is a huge "follower" in pretty much whatever group she joins-and she knows that. I think that the appeal of Stoneybrook vs. NY is that kids at SMS (not necessarily her friends but they did, to an extent) looked up to her, thinking she was way cooler because she was from the city, and she knew and liked that. Does that make sense? Oh, well, I'm rambling. But I found Stacey to be a pretty realistic 13 year old and I like that this book portrays that accurately, IMO.

Stacey even admitted this once, when she was deciding whether to come back to Stoneybrook or stay in NYC when her parents split up. She said that Laine's and her friends were really much more Laine's friends, Laine was the leader, and they were all Laine's followers. But I still love Stacey, too.

I'm in the middle of rereading this one, and I'm definitely in the minority about Amy. She's driving me crazy, and I have no sympathy for her. Six seems too old to be having crying, screaming fits because your parents are leaving, and I don't think it was that wrong for her parents to leave them with the Schafer/Spiers. After all, the families are trying to reconnect, and it's possible that they just didn't have any other options. I can understand homesickness, but Amy just comes across as a spoiled brat.

Maybe it was the very first time she ever spent time away from her parents. That can be traumatic.

Amy didn't even know the Shafer/Spiers. Not only did she have to deal with her parents being out of the country for three weeks, but she had to spend that time with people who are essentially strangers.
