i've never thought the bsc times aren't convenient. i mean they are still available 3 days a week for half an hour, i don't think it'd be too difficult for a parent to wait til then to make a call. i don't remember them discussing this in that book, though, can you elaborate to remind me please Stacey says when she's explaining how the BSC is set up, "Okay, so it isn't perfect. It's not set up so parents can call round-the-clock. They have to memorize those three half hours. But you know what? No one seems to mind...." I just liked it that one of the girls at least mentioned that the system may not be perfectly convenient for everyone, all the time. Agree that waiting until those times shouldn't be that big of a problem (and they can always call any time for emergencies) but see how people might have conflicts with those times, etc.

I re-read this book recently and it's one of my favorite of the later books. I tend to skip the Amy chapters though, because it's so boring compared to the rest of the book. I also just don't really identify with people who are homesick -- they always annoyed me at camp/first day of university/etc. Why sit around crying when there's fun to be had? There's always fun to be had.
Anyway, I don't really like how at the end they put Stacey on probation. I'm fine with her being on club probation, but to me it kind of sounds like friend probation too, and friendship shouldn't be conditional. If you are someone's friend, you are someone's friend, through thick and thin. It's obvious that Stacey is struggling with some stuff, and she needed her friends to know when to back off and when to be there for her. I'm glad they let her back in. I guess I'm mostly just taking issue with the phrase that appeared in the next book where dawn says they need to watch Stacey closely. It just sounds really weird to me.
I thought some of the parents call whenever, and that's why Claudia has an answering machine.

^ When I first read your post, I thought for a second that you were saying the cops put Stacey on probation for the concert incident. I was like how did I miss that??? ;D

Just read this book for the first time, and I really liked it! I thought that it was weird how the 'in crowd' was such a different group of people. One was 'punk', with her nose ring, black clothing, etc. And then, there's the cheerleader. When I went to school, those people would never have even looked at each other. I really felt for Amy, too. I thought it was horrible how her parents just dumped her off there, poor little girl. I was also confused about how she managed to get to Bellaire's. But it was so sad, and I really felt for her. Imagine being without your parents for three whole weeks at that age! I wouldn't have been able to handle more than a day or two at that age!

^ I never stayed apart from my parents at that age so I could really relate to Amy. I also wondered how she got to Bellaire's. How far was it? That's kind of scary to think how far she got on her own....

I felt bad for Amy too. I've never been that far away from my family until college.
Did anyone else get the feeling that the Porters only got in in touch and became close with the Schafers just so they could have someone to drop their kid on and baby-sit for three weeks?
And was there a reason why Amy ran to Bellaire's? Because of all places to run to, that seems kind of strange.

I felt for poor Amy... when I was 6 and had been left on my own with people I didn't know for 3 whole weeks, I would have hated it.

I don't get kids that can't be away from their parents, which made me not like Amy very much.

I was the opposite. I love my parents but I always loved spending the night with relatives or friends.

To each his own, I guess, since I don't get kids who don't want to be around their parents. ;D Agree, Maddie, that the Porters seemed to only get in touch because they needed somewhere to dump their kid. Also agree that Bellaire's is a strange place for her to go. Wasn't she looking for the train station or something?

It's not that I didn't want to be around my parents, but I enjoyed meeting new people and trying new things. I was always encouraged to be independent, and I probably would have enjoyed staying at the Spier house, as I would know it was only temporary.
But I do think it's weird that they suddenly got in touch with Sharon when they needed a place to drop of Amy. Didn't they know anyone in Chicago?

I love my parents but I didn't want to be around them 24/7. I loved summers when my brothers and I would visit our grandparents in Chicago and New Mexico and our parents would leave us there for a couple of weeks.

As I said, personal preference. ;D I guess I just can really relate to Amy. I wondered the same thing, penny lane, about why they didn't leave her with someone else in Chicago. Didn't they have any closer friends? I always thought it was funny that one of the problems between the families was something about Mr. Porter working for a meat company. ;D

I can understand Amy's behavior to a point, but seriously, it's not like she was dumped off at a stranger's house. Dawn and Sharon are related to her! And they tried so hard to make her feel welcome (didn't they even spruce up Jeff's room for her?), but she just acted like a brat.

^ She had never met Dawn and Sharon before she was dumped on them. From what I understood, they were pretty much strangers. Blood connections don't make relationships. ;D
