I was jealous of kids that got braces early. Some kids I knew had them on and off by 12. At least they got to go through the awkward teenage years with nice teeth. I was lucky to have mine off before senior pictures.

I had mine off by 8th grade, but I have a permanent retainer bonded to my bottom teeth. Some days it is so frustrating!

I liked this book, happy that Mal had her chance to shine..but the BSC annoyed me..also hypocritical of Claudia to scold Mal for asking the Perkins what they wanted for a snack when she's such a junk food fanatic.

I always hated that the BSC gave her that test even though they didn't even know the answers in the first place.

I wonder would that test the Cult gave Mal should be considered a hazing ritual?

I liked when Mal commented a doctor couldn't have passed the test..and how she corrected Claud and the girls.

I always hated that the BSC gave her that test even though they didn't even know the answers in the first place. My theory was that they were missing Stacey and they took it out on Mallory. They didn't give Dawn a hard time when she first joined the club did they? They didn't give her any test, so I think they were just taking it out on Mallory.

Well Dawn was their age and she was never a charge. I think they felt a little superior.

Well Dawn was their age and she was never a charge. I think they felt a little superior. Mal was show to be super competent prior to that (including when she kept Dawn from accidentally giving Marnie the chocolate) so I agree/think that (subconsciously) they didn't *really* want Mallory to join but knew they needed more than 4 members. I think that is why they made the test so hard and why Claudia was so harsh about Mal's job with the Perkins.

The way people wanted the Baby Sitters Agency because they were older seemed to have rubbed off on the BSC, lol. They seemed to not have wanted Mal and Jessi for the same reason, lol.

Mallory always seems to have a hard time in these books. This time, she definitely did nothing to deserve it. Think about it - when they thought about letting Logan join the club, all they did was let him go on a job with Mary Anne. Even worse, that job was with a new client - they had no idea they were babysitting for an accident-prone seven-year-old.
Mallory was sent on a job with two sweet girls who were never any trouble and who were regular clients, and she still got totally criticized. Yes, Mallory made mistakes. But when Gabbie cried, Mallory made it clear that she was a good sitter by cheering her up, and then suggesting a daytime pyjama party that worked out well. And her problems are pretty clearly because Claudia was making her nervous. The approach they took at the end, when Claudia is basically "just pretend I'm not here - you're in charge" meant that Mallory could relax and do the job her own way, which worked out really well...not that Jamie and Lucy are usually much trouble.
Speaking of Logan's job, I wish we'd gotten to see Jessi on her test job with Dawn. I'd like to see how she handled Jackie. Anyone else think that might've been interesting? Also, I wish one of Mallory's test jobs had been with a different sitter. She was with Claudia both times, but I see why they did it too. It was basically to illustrate how different her behaviour was to each job.
My other question is...why did the girls not realize their test was unfair? Did they really think Mallory needed all that information when they'd never needed it?

At least she sticks up for Jessi in the end, saying she won't join unless Jessi can as well, though that detail will be whitewashed (no pun intended) in later books, the older sitters simply saying that "later" they "let" or "asked" Jessi to join. Well, they admitted that's what happened in "The All-New Mallory Pike" when they recall the events of this book. And "Mallory and The Trouble With Twins". And "Mallory and The Mystery Diary". And "Poor Mallory!".
