I do still see them, but they're not 25 cents a call anymore. They went up to 50, and then a dollar over here.

We still have them in my town although many cities in my county took them out.

The pay phone thing reminded me of all the times I had to use the one at school to call for a ride home after band practices. We used to have one at my library, but it got taken out a couple years ago due to low usage.

Most of the pay phones in my neighborhood got taken down as well because for the most part, no one uses them.

LOL about calling for rides after rehearsals. There was a line around the phones at the school every time for just that (late 90s)

I remember having a pager and running to a payphone to return the call home, so pointless!

My favorite scene in this book is still Kristy baby-sitting Becca and Squirt. I still (I posted this up thread) don't recall Kristy ever sitting for them again and that's really too bad. I had the thought if Kristy had sat more at the Ramsey's it might have been cool to also see a friendship develop with Jessi, sort of like I had hoped for Stacey and Mal since they lived so close together. This is also one of the few books where Charlotte is 8 and in 4th grade yet she and Becca are still friends. I do wish that had remained so, since other than a few instances neither Charlotte or Becca are shown having other friends. This time around, it was cool when the Pikes were inventing their own sign language and Margo wondered how to sign elephant--made me smile to think of Dumbo. Anyway, I confess the ballet stuff still doesn't hold much interest to me but it was awesome how Jessi helped Katie Beth get a little closer to Adele. I also wondered what Haley might have thought of meeting Adele. Someone her own age, who like Matt was deaf. That might have been a positive thing for them both.

^ Kristy and Jessi would have been an interesting friendship pairing. They're both involved in physical activities and are athletic, but not in the same way. That would eliminate the element of competition that existed between Kristy and Abby later in the series.

Start rereading this again. This time, I can take my time of reading it. Don't have to rush back to the library.

That is an interesting point, Starrynight. :)Kristy is naturally (and works hard) talented at softball, plus I think she was very athletic in general and enjoyed being outside and involved in some type of sport. I will always love the idea of Kristy's Krushers. I think Kristy loved playing and coaching the kids as much as the kids did being a team. I think it really did help Kristy feel like she was making a more direct difference to those kids, helping them feel apart of the team. Jessi, definitely did enjoy performing and I'm glad Mme. Noelle's school was (when no phantoms were on the loose) a good place for her to grow as a ballerina. O/T to sports, Kristy and Jessi, in different ways, both knew what it is like to be on the outside of things and just want to belong. I just thought Kristy and Becca had the beginnings of a sweet friendship in this book and wish it had been continued. ETA: I hope you enjoy the story, Buttercup.

I finished reading this book. I rated 3 out of 5 stars. After the opening night. When they went to Charley's restaurant/ice cream parlor. Remind me, the time we went out to dinner for my older sister's 8th grade graduation. We first went to Red Lobster's. But, they were crowded was going take over an hour just get seats the party we had. ( I think, their was over 20 people.) Then, were like, let's go to a different restaurant. So, we went to Outback steakhouse. First time going there. We got there. Some of the parents, didn't like it, cause of the bar. Then, someone else suggested Applebee's. (Not fan of Applebee's.) I do like their Strawberry/kiwi lemonade. So, we ate there.
BTTB: It was nice of Jessi, having the deaf children at the opening night. Karen, and her imagination. A ghost party cracks me up, when Claudia said, "And your going to it?" "Are you kidding?" Replied Karen. "That would be crazy. But I'm in charge of refreshments. All night it's going to be my job to take food to the bottom of the third-floor stairs and leave it there for the ghosts."
Liverwurst? Doesn't sound to appealing to eat. I think, that's what British sometimes eat with a cracker.

Pate is actually very yummy, despite being liver.

I love pate as well; my mom used to make it for our family Christmas Eve party.
