^ Claudia also could have stood up for herself more and even suggested a re-test or something. Not that she was to blame, but she basically accepted his accusations so to speak. It's not that easy. Claudia was not one with high confidence in herself, and it can take a lot of guts to stand up to someone in authority.

^That is very true, Her parents, were a different story, however. Regardless of their initial reaction (suspicions) they should have set up an immediate retest.

I find her parents never seem to take real action and blame Claudia for everything she can't do, and I don't blame her for having low self esteem when it comes to marks. There are so many examples of her being smart, but no one focuses on that about her or enables her to keep going. Another good example is in Claudia and the Great Search when she liked doing the diagram in biology or something. And I'm sure home ec may have been nice for her since she always like to prepare food (and jewelry lol) and make it all pretty.

Maybe because I have read this before, I was super annoyed with everyone for trying to figure out how to prove she didn't cheat when it was so obvious to just take the test again. Reading about Claudia trying to make shawna break down an confess by using words in sentences like lies and cheats is ridiculous!!!!!!
I love her sea outfit though!

I was extra annoyed by Claudia's parents and SMS faculty for not doing something (other than giving Claudia an F) immediately. Also, when Claud was given the "gift" of a re-test in class (the same day as being told she would have that chance), Shawna should have also been asked to take a new test as well!

I agree that if I were Shawna, I would have tried to at least fake my way through the retest!
What do you think of Shawna's punishment? In addition to getting an F on the test she was suspended for two days. I have no idea if that's common punishment at most schools for cheating but it sounds pretty fair to me.

^ I agree, that was pretty fair. Not only did she cheat, but she covered it up and let someone else take the blame. Suspension works.

I sort of feel like her punishment was lame but I guess she had a good record up to that point. I wish she ha made future appearances!

^ She did make future appearances. One appearance was in Dawn Saves the Planet. I think she appeared in Mary Anne and Too Many Babies as well.

^Yeah, they turned her into an idiot in Mary Anne + 2 Many Babies, disappointingly. :/

It's also too bad we never got to read about the next math test. I bet Claudia (if she remembered) insisted her desk was FAR from Shawna's. I'd hope Mr. Zorzi would be more alert, too. As for Shawna's punishment, I also think it was fine. If she hadn't gloated to her friends practically in Claud's face (Claud was in a bathroom stall) I would have felt bad for her. Of course, she should never have cheated or out-right lied about doing so. I just meant I could get why a 13 year old might resort to cheating from being stressed out.

both girls should have been asked to redo the test right away and be given a second chance, pointing fingers like that was unprofessional, and he was a training teacher right?

I had read Karen's Big Lie last night hoping that might make this story a little clearer or better but it didn't. I realized that Karen tells us all of the KIMCC arithmetic tests were of the 4+3=___________ type. Each student was supposed to fill in the blank. In Claudia's case, there had to be need for some calculations to have been shown! I remember in school math teachers always stressing that we had to show our work. I can't believe Mr. Zorzi who unlike Ms. Colman, was sitting at the front of the class the entire time, failed to notice Shawna copying. And, unless Shawna has both eagle eyes and the fastest pencil in the east, how she managed to copy Claudia to the extent I think she must have is beyond me, too! This is definitely one of my least favorite BSC books. I have never been in Claudia's exact situation but I do know what it is like to be thought the worst of immediately and by someone like Claud's parents who should do the opposite. Back to the story. Claudia is deemed a cheater, Mr. Zorzi, in no uncertain terms, gives her an F grade. Period the end. Oh yeah, Mr. Taylor, the principal does talk to Mrs. Kishi on the phone, "to inform her of the situation." Rioko and John tell Claudia that they "guess Mr. Taylor was just following the usual procedure." Claud's parents "think" they should go down to the school and Claud within the space of a few minutes max, talks them out of that. From this point until Claudia has re-taken the test and that was all thanks to Janine, there is zero mention of what happened by Claud's parents, or anyone at SMS! That, makes me so sad and also angry to realize. No wonder Claudia felt her parents didn't believe her--they didn't! I think they could have given the situation a little time as in immediately after dinner to cool off but sometime before bedtime, Rioko and John should have offered Claud a hug and told her that they loved her and really did want to help make things right. I can totally see Janine, reminding Claudia, that she would help in anyway she could, too. Janine really was the best part of this book aside from my agreeing with Claudia that of course the more chocolate the merrier.

I haven't read this one in a while but the original cover was exactly how I pictured Claudia. From what I remember I love that it was Janine to be the one to help her with the retest idea rather than her parents.
