Then, doesn't Mrs. Lowell turn on Stacey and Dawn because their parents are divorced? D*mn, that woman was picky. Nah, the BSC were just snarking and claiming that she wouldn't approve. I don't think she ever officially disapproved, although given the opportunity, I'm sure she would. The Kilbourne's stayed together for the sake of the children, though. Mrs Lowell would like that mindset. She would also have liked the Bruno family, although she wouldn't have liked Logan babysitting. She might've thought that was a little... fruity. But Rosie preferred Claudia for her personality, her love of art. Preferring a babysitter purely on the fact that she has blue eyes and blonde hair - the kids hadn't even MET Stacey or Dawn - IS offensive IMO. Most racist people are a tad more subtle though. They wouldn't specifically ask for the Aryan girl. They'd be likely to claim that a friend recommended Stacey or Dawn, not that they want the "blonde/blue variety".

The ending certainly was bugging. Not changing Mrs Lowells views would've been weird, but confronting her with them wouldn't have been weird, after we've read about all these girls telling parents how to raise their kids. It was nice to see Claudia being discriminated against and it not being all about jessi - again. I also liked the talks Kristy and Claudia had with their parents. Actually telling them about what's going on! Amazing.
"Mallory has SEVEN brothers and sisters!" "She must be catholic, then"
That one actually made me grin. No offence to anyone, I'm officially catholic myself.

^ Catholics? I thought it was the Mormons that were the ones known for polygamy?

^Well, the pope has always come out against contraception, even with hiv and aids around. It's just against the Catholic law.

Well I guess if sex didn't occur outside marriage (as I'm sure is also required by Catholic law, although I don't know the first thing about it) I guess HIV and AIDS wouldn't really be much of an issue.

^true.
a lot of people theorize in the fandom that Mallory is Catholic, but I feel that since it was never confirmed or denied and Ann has stated that she likes big families (which is kind of weird thing to have as an interest), i feel that the pikes are a large family because mr. and mrs. pike are out of their minds, not because of a lack of belief in BC.

BC = Birth Control
ITA
Besides, the kids stopped abruptly after Claire, which suggests the Pikes are either abstaining (for 5+ yrs in a happy previously sex-crazed marriage? Unlikely) REALLY successful with the rhythm method, suffering from unexplained infertility (hardly...) or using BC. Personally I think the latter is the most likely.

They definitely never say Mal's Catholic, I think it's in Poor Mallory when Amanda Delaney is shocked there are so many kids in her family and asks "Are you CATHOLIC?!"

I agree. I know plenty of Catholics who use bc so I've always been under the impression that you have to be pretty conservative/strict not to. And I think if the Pikes were so religious that they refused to use bc, mentions of their religion would have popped up in other areas of the books, at least every once in awhile.

^ yeah, ITA. The majority of Catholic families I know have... um, two kids two or three yrs apart. Strange for a couple not using BC. I think only the VERY strict abide by the no BC rule these days.

Where was Mr. Lowell? I don't remember him being mentioned. This confuses me because throughout the entire book the BSC referrs to the situation with MRS Lowell. Not THE Lowells. Then at the end when Caitlin and Mackie are sneaking a look at the All The Children concert, Jessi says something about THEIR parents. Was this just a generalization, like something you just say, or did I miss a reference somewhere?

Well, they weren't divorced for sure, because they were against that... I think the girls only met Mrs Lowell, but Mr. Lowell must be part of the problem, too.
