Every time I see a picture of any of those Disney Channel teenagers they are in over the top 80s fashions. Like, they look like they're wearing costumes cause they're so "80s". I don't see anyone who was actually alive to experience those fashions the first time wanting to relive that stuff.

I was born in 81, but I don't ever remember normal people dressing in what we might think of as 80's fashions these days.

Claudia saying "trigonomulus" made me lol. And I still want a pair of clock tights. Doesn't Claudia roll her eyes at the mention of Trevor in Kristy's Big Day and says that he's practically married to his poetry or something? It's too bad. I would have liked them being a Stacey and Sam-like couple over the course of the series. Claudia seem to have a type...Trevor, Terry, and Georgio Trono all have the dark, handsome, mysterious loner thing going on. Claud's tendency to job hog is made an issue of twice. Wouldn't it have been interesting if this had been given its own plot, beyond the fight they have in Saves the Day--Claud needs more money to pay for her candy, art supplies, and clothes and so starts accepting a lot of jobs without telling anyone. Gives "Bad Baby-sitter" a different meaning! I like the Stacey/Charlotte chapter, with them watching a scary movie before the lights go out. The sitting job takes place on my b-day, which I always liked as a kid. When Stacey asks Charlotte what she wants to do, it's "watch TV." That would have been met with a "no way" and suggestions of games, relays, or making something or other in later books!

They also must have let the charges watch tv on occasion a lot of other times, because in #3 Charlotte's favorite program is identified as The Cosby Show.

just reread this last night. i think it's hilarious that kristy threatened to punch out one of the kids. last summer i watched a couple of nine year old boys and i totally talked the same way with them, but they just laughed it off. it's funny, and it's refreshing to see kristy acting like a regular tomboyish kid. she becomes such a stuffy mini adult as the series goes on, and i like her better before.

I would never want BSC fashion to be updated. I much prefer reading about all the insane 80's and early 90's stuff they wore. I wish I could find a pair of tights with clocks on them like Claudia had in this book. That would be so dibble! my mom had a clock skirt and shirt in the early 90's and it looked horrible!!!

That part always made me laugh as well. I agree, it is sometimes nice to see Kristy acting like a normal 12 year old tomboy.

I think clocks were big before. There's mention of clocks on stockings in Cheaper By the Dozen, taking place in the early 20s!

I love the fantasy Claudia has in the book about her and Trevor being on a field trip, and getting lost in a maze together and then finding a portal to another dimension. Because that is EXACTLY the kind of crazy and lame fantasy I would have had about a crush when I was 12.
Also, as I was rereading this I was surprised at how bitchy Claudia was! Seriously, she was pretty hard to like in it, the way she was so disparaging of Kristy and Mary Anne and their "babyish" friends. And then she would just turn around and giggle flirtatiously at the boys at her own lunch table because they played with their food, which she thought was super mature.
I really like the first books. I actually like when Kristy tells the kids she's sitting for that she'll punch their lights out if they misbehave...because she's acting like a genuinely impulsive 12-year-old with a big mouth.

MA is also pretty impulsive, what with her alarms.

i really liked how kristy's older brothers teased MA about the burglar alarms. i always imagined that sam and charlie were kind of like the brothers she never had. i think it was really sweet. i could totally see MA having a crush on one of them too, until stacey comes along and steals sam away. haha.

The fact that Sam and Charlie were probably like the brothers that MA never had is exactly why I can picture her not having a crush on one of them, because it would be too weird for her to think of them romantically!
