The movie itself? It's the movie Mary Anne, Logan, Dawn and Lewis go to for their big date, and it mentions specific events, and in Stacey and the Missing Ring, iirc, Stacey and her mom rent it (the movie they can "always agree on"), and it describes the opening credits and then Claudia comes over for some reason.

After reading this book, i think was when i really started to like Stacey,i guess it was the fact i could relate to her and what she was going through. I was in and out of hospital between the ages of 11-14, in fact i read most of the BSC books while in there! I alway felt Stacey was lucky with how the rest of the BSC stood by her,i myself wasn't as fortunate and found out who my real friends were pretty quickly back then. This is still one of my favs today! :-)

A few things I thought of as I re-read this last night were:
How could Dr. Johanssen have made a doctor's appointment for Stacey without first talking to the McGills? If Stacey were 18, or even a patient or relative but since she wasn't, it struck me as odd. I've said this before, but it still angers me that when Dr. J says to Stacey "But I'm not your doctor" by way of a reason to not "interfere," neither of them wonder why she isn't or if she could be! I wish their relationship had been developed. Of course as far as we know, neither of the McGills ever talked with Dr. J or vice versa at any time.
It was 4:30pm when Stacey almost bought herself and Charlotte one piece of candy. I think Stacey wanted a mini chocolate bar (I'm guessing similar in size to a Hershey Miniature)? and it was never stated what Char would have gotten. Anyway, Stacey decides it is too close to dinner. In Stoneybrook, dinnertime seems to be between 6:30 and 7pm. Even for 7 year old Char, how would that small a piece of candy "ruin her dinner?" Maybe, I just wanted to see Stacey give in to temptation for once. More than that, I just felt bad for Char especially due to what came next at the playground.

The McGills were possibly prejudiced against a small town doctor like Dr. Johanssen. There are stereotypes that they aren't as educated or as up to date with new treatments as doctors in more urban areas. Maureen in particular was portrayed as kinda psycho about Stacey's medical care, so it made sense that they would keep taking her to NYC doctors.

That's a good point, never thought of it before...they definitely would prefer city doctors.

I nver thought there was any prejudice against Dr. J. Stacey obviously needed a doctor right away after moving to Stoneybrook, and she didn't know the Johanssens yet. Plus, maybe Dr. J isn't enough of a specialist in diabetes-related care? Stacey's case WAS a tough one, as we're reminded from time to time.

I thought it was silly, too, especially because Charlotte said she only wanted one piece of candy. I think Stacey just used the "too close to dinner" thing as a handy excuse to steer herself away from the temptation of it. Oh, and she also added that Dr. J doesn't like Charlotte eating sweets.

The Dr. Barnes thing did make it sound like the McGills were seeking one "fancy" doctor after another. Apparently even Stacey recognized that by wanting Dr. Graham to have a lot of diplomas. So maybe her parents were at least somewhat prejudiced against small town docs. Good point and one I had never thought of. Wasn't Stacey's Stoneybrook doctor, Dr. Frank? I wonder if he was a regular doc or a specialist? It just seemed, to me, anyway, that during their conversation was an obvious time for one of them to have at least brought up the possibility of Dr. J becoming Stacey's doctor and/or even why that wouldn't work.
Candykane, glad I'm not alone in that. It seemed like they spent a good 10-15 minutes inside the candy store. I thankfully do not have diabetes but I've also never been a true candy addict, just other types of sweets. I think I would have gotten something after all that time!

I felt sorry for Stacey when her parents dragged her to the doctor for a "cure." I can understand why they would do it but I was annoyed and I thought that they should've just accepted that there was no cure for diabetes.
I thought that $1.75 for popcorn and a small Tab (what is that?) in NYC seemed really cheap, even when the book was written. Reading this book again after reading The Summer Before makes it weird that Laine and Stacey became friends again because Laine and the other girls were so horrible to Stacey in The Summer Before.

^Tab came in a reddish can a long time ago. I never drank it, but, it was similar to Coke. I just Googled and it sounds like an early version of Diet Coke. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tab_(soft_drink)

Just finished another re-read and the part about the parents suddenly deciding it would be a good idea to know their Sitters beforehand, jumped out at me more. Did that imply that before the trouble with the BSA, Stoneybrook parents did leave their kid with any random pre or young teen? Mrs. Newton sure made it sound that way. :/
