TKAM overall did have a great message and for many years it was one of my very favorite books. However, I just can't imagine Laine being utterly exuberant that the BSC was about to watch it, particularly given the timing in that scene. I don't view TKAM as a movie that diffuses tension or that is light hearted.

I think of this book every time I reread Confessions of a Shopaholic (which I did this weekend at the beach):
James never does knock at her door, but I always think the eyes Becky makes would probably work on Pete Black.

Hahaha! Lilafowler - never thought of that, but that is probably true.
I LOVE Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic - absolutely adore Becky Bloomwood.

No such scene as which? Stacey hid the Lennie doll before Laine got there - she was cleaning up for her arrival. ok now I remember it, that scene slipped my mind...I thought of Laine being dumped under underwear lol

I didn't like Laine in this book. I thought that she was being a snob. Even though I didn't like her in this book, I thought that she acted normally for a 13 year old.

Yeah she reminded me so much of my cousin when she was 13 and thought me and my friends were below her. But then again, sometimes Stacey's behaviour reminded me of that too in later books.

^ I think lots of people go through that kind of a phase. It's just less obvious with some of us than with others.

Yeah I became like that too after my cousin, we were totally Stacey and Laine  I was Stacey, she was Laine but then I became Laine with other people though at other times I was okay like Stacey

I just re-read and had wondered why Laine couldn't have compromised by coming to Stoneybrook for a long weekend or something? She could have come Friday-Monday and still had Tuesday-the following Sunday in NY or wherever.
The Valentine Masquerade sounded adorable and like a lot of fun. The only semi-odd thing but that's almost always the case in BSC-land is that the ratio of boys to girls was 6 to 9.

Agree that she should have only come to CT for a shorter visit. Especially since Stacey was in school the whole time. Nowadays a teen would spend a lot of time online or texting to while away the hours, but all Laine really had was books and TV to entertain herself. Maureen was at work, too, wasn't she? So Laine was by herself. That'd be pretty boring after a couple of days.

^I assume Maureen was working. It might have been "interesting" had she and Laine hung out at all. Laine was pretty much on her own at Stacey's house. This was not only pre cell phones and computers, but if this were Laine's first visit to Stoneybrook, no matter, how small a town it may be, she still wouldn't know where anything was. I guess she potentially could have taken the bus (if there was one) into town or out to the mall, the way the girls did in "Mystery at the Mall." The shopping channel could have given her something to do or at least watch!

I wondered the same thing about a long weekend. How fricking boring to sit in someones house for that long. I mean she may have been bored enough to find Lennie under that dirty underwear....
I just reread this one and it occurs to me that maybe Laine chose to come to SB to make herself feel better. I mean she comes there sees all these people that she can put down and be mean to. Maybe that is what is happening to her when she is dating her heart (gag me). She's dating a 15 year old and I'm sure his friends could be acting that way to her. I don't know just a thought. It always seemed to me like her character was mean to people to feel better about her. I would have loved for her to answer Stacey's letter!

^ that's a really interesting point. i never thought about it that way! but stacey did seem to idolize laine. laine probably knew stacey's small town friends would look up to her the same way too. and you're probably right about king's friends looking down on her. (although i'm not sure why stacey was so shocked about laine dating a 15 year old, when she herself dated sam.)

That all makes a lot of sense, I never thought of it, though she always seemed dominating at school too with her Parker Academy group. LOL @ Lennie the doll.

^A bit of a delay, but I, too, wanted to say, "right on, Wiggirl." Stacey always made it sound like Laine, as she got older, (I loved reading about L and S ditching dance school since they both seemed young, genuine, and a lot of fun. Very real) became "the leader." Of the clique that is. For whatever reasons, as Supprazz said, Laine had "power" to influence a huge following and/or at least a good portion of the school population. Scary, actually and semi reminiscent of the movie "The Wave." Stacey herself admitted to us at least once that she was a follower to Laine despite not always caring for Laine's choices. Laine was "cool," she was "in," and quite probably she got a lot of "favors."
That's all yet another reason I wish Stacey's friendship with Kristy had been better written. I know Kristy was far from "perfect." She certainly had her less than desirable moments and qualities. We all do. Like Jessi said in comparision to Wendy, Kristy was a (good and true) leader. She never tried "leading" anyone away from anyone else or encouraging less "popular" people to be put down or disregarded, she was interested in trying to lead people to bring them together (generally for some good cause) but also with charges to have fun. Big difference. I think Stacey was well aware of that and was in awe/admiration of Kristy for it. Too bad also Stacey had her own habit of "chosing" friends (at times). I hated Stacey, well disliked her a whole lot, I'm editing this reading through the thread, in #4 when she said something like "I don't need you guys. I'm tough. Remember where I'm from?" I know she was angry. I also know for once she was 12. I did dislike her immensely at that moment and think some of that translated later into the "Bad Girls" arc. Laine, never seemed to have that problem, maybe because of the sheer number of "friends" she had? I wonder if she even thought of them as "friends?" I do think she genuinely (in the beginning) did care for Stacey.
