Dawn looks so happy on the cover of this one. If California could wipe that sour look that she had on so many of the other covers off her face, then maybe she did belong there.

She did look very happy.
I liked the food descriptions in this book. Wasn't there a mention of some kind of spinach quiche? And Mrs. Bruen's breakfasts sounded fab. I wish I had someone to cook me breakfast like that every day!

^ The best Mrs. Bruen meal ever was the four cheese macaroni and raspberry crisp from later on in the series. I may have to try making that myself sometime.....
Is this the book where we first meet Mrs. Bruen? I never thought much about her either way when I was reading the series the first time around, but now I really like her. She may even be one of my favorite minor characters!

I thought it was sweet how Jeff "fought" for Mrs. Bruen in "Here Come the Bridesmaids." It sounded like the two of them cared for one another. I think Mrs. Bruen might have been mentioned once before as in "My Dad hired a housekeeper" but I don't think she ever had a true scene until this book.

^I'm afraid I can't answer that question, Oldhickory. I was also wondering if Mrs. Bruen is a live in or does she go home at night? I thought of this because my Dad is currently reading a mystery book by Ken Bruen--perhaps he is her husband.

^ I'm pretty sure Mrs. Bruen goes home at night.

I pictured her to be like Alice on The Brady Bunch, except without living in a broom closet off the kitchen. (Seriously, I think Alice lived in the pantry.)
I feel like Dawn said once that Mrs. Bruen had a family of her own, but I don't know what book it might have been in.

Thanks both of you. I guess we'll have to check or maybe someone else knows.

In Dawn and the Halloween Mystery, Dawn says that Mrs. Bruen is spending a lot of time at her daughter's because she had a baby.

^I've never read that mystery, so that wasn't the one I was thinking of. But it is nice to know she had more going on than the Schafers.

I skip over almost all the Dawn stuff in that mystery so I wasn't aware of that either. I agree, Sparklymouse.
Edited to add I just finished reading CA girls. At the end, Dawn tells us that she was glad Mrs. Bruen arrived early. So she must not have "lived in."

I liked reading about the trip to Disneyland. It sounded like it was a lot of fun. I liked the description of Jack's house. It sounded like a nice house. I thought the scene where the flight attendant ignored her because she (the flight attendant) was too busy helping Tom, who was sitting next to Dawn.
