I prefer California Diaries. They're dark, and I like dark. I tend to like books that are either dark and depressing (CD) or light and fluffy (original BSC) more than I like books that aim for a middle ground between the two. I don't know why, because I am usually appreciative of shades of gray in things, but I guess not so much when it comes to the overall tone of a book.

^ Interesting observation of yourself. I'm currently reading Sunny, Diary 1 and am appreciating her darkness (she's probably one of the more darker characters).

I like them both, but CD creeps me out because these girls are like 13 and going to parties and drinking and running away. I like my entertainment cheesy so FF wins. Plus I could actually feel good about handing BSC or FF books to kids, while I wouldn't give anyone under the age of 15 a CD. Ironically my mom is one of the most over protective people when it came to what I read or watched and I read the CD right when they came out so I was probably 11 or 12. I think the fact that they were "BSC" books made her think they were safe to give me without reading them first.

I can't choose, really. Liked the theme of the California Diaries, but the diary format was a bit "tiring" to read. Some of the Friends Forever books were fun, too.
