There are several serious issue books, like Kristy and the Secret of Susan and Jessi and the Awful Secret. It seems like most of them aren't well-liked. But out of all the serious issue books, which do you consider to be the worst?

I'll have to think about this one! Does Claudia and the Great Search Count? or the Emily subplot of Kristy and the Mother's Day Surprise? Off the top of my early morning head, I'll say "Kristy Thomas, Dog Trainer." Withholding my opinion on using animals in this way, this story seemed especially over the top preachy. I absolutely hated in Abby's Un-Valentine (well the whole book stunk) when Elizabeth and Watson did not even consider adopting puppy at a shelter for Andrew. I just thought the way they (all the TB's) handled the explanation of why Sadie had to leave their family was akin to Stacey talking down to Charlotte about her diabetes in Stacey and the Mystery of Stoneybrook. Basically, "You're problem is miniscule compared to mine, so you don't have the right to be wasting energy on yours." I'm all for remembering that other people out there are going through worse, or harder situations than I might be. No question that is sadly true. However, when someone, particularly an older person to a child tells this to the child in a way to implies the child's concern is trivial and really doesn't matter, there in lies my problem. Maybe because I was told this repeatedly as a kid and fyi I was abused at times in various ways that this type of "parenting" or even at times between "friends" bugs the heck out of me. Enough of my rambles. I look forward to others thoughts. Great topic Anzuhana.

I take it you don't like service animals, zoar3? I admit they don't look like they have the most fun lives ever. K9 cops are pretty badass though. As far as the Dog Trainer book goes, the sub plot was a little too creepy. Yes kids, you too could wake up blind with glaucoma one day!!
I think it's a toss-up between Abby the Bad Sport and Mary Anne and the Memory Garden. The "retarded" soccer player one was poorly written (I don't think it ever even clicked in my brain that Abby's rival was challenged). The random kid getting hit by a drunk driver was just dumb.

The "retarded" soccer player one was poorly written (I don't think it ever even clicked in my brain that Abby's rival was challenged). i picked abby the bad sport solely for this reason.

I just have mixed feelings on the use of animals for any reason, Sparklymouse.
I also agree that Amelia's death in Memory garden was so very sudden and not very well written nor ever revisited again. I think what made this book worse was the subplot. "Bad Sport" (you ladies already know I'm not an Abby fan) was boring. I have to say Erin (Abby's rival) was much more interesting to read about (to me) than Abby's temper tantrums.

I'm gonna have to go with Abby the Bad Sport. It's been a while since I read the book but didn't Erin seem more or less "normal" instead of being mentally challenged?

The "retarded" soccer player one was poorly written (I don't think it ever even clicked in my brain that Abby's rival was challenged). I read Abby and the Bad Sport over the weekend (for the first time) and I didn't know Erin was supposed to be challenged until she got mad at Abby for calling her stupid.

Dawn and Whitney, Friends Forever came to mind immediately when I saw the title of this thread, but I can't disagree with the poorly-written Abby and the Bad Sport. The BSC was not at its best when writing about developmental disability.

I'd have to go with Abby the Bad Sport too, mostly because it was just boring to me. :/

Jessi and the Awful Secret was kind of lame ... as was Jessi's Wish. Maybe my answer should be any Jessi related serious issue book?
