I can attest to a shorter, less uncomfortable period with reusable pads. I've made them from old flannel and used them a lot. They aren't quite as absorbent as the disposable ones, but it makes a big difference.

Wow! I wonder why that is so--is there a scientific reason for that?
That Lunapads site has pretty cool stuff. wenonah, are the ones you've made of the same design? It looks like something worth trying to make at home.

Yes- the disposable stuff makes your period artifically longer by causing you to bleed more!

Very fascinating. Luckily, my periods aren't that bad, but I'd love to try them just to be Dawn-like and reduce the amount of waste the disposable stuff produces.

How can a disposable pad make you bleed more?

^ I am wondering the same thing. How does your body know what kind of protection you're wearing?

The chemicals in the disposables actually somehow cause it. I'm not sure what's in them.

Even though I got mine at 11, I never thought about the girls having theirs, lol.

I got mine at 11 too I think. It really wasn't until I started posting on these boards did the thought of the girls having their periods enter my brain.

With the number of books mentioned within BSC books, it's almost surprising that there's no mention (that I know of) of Are you there God?

With the number of books mentioned within BSC books, it's almost surprising that there's no mention (that I know of) of Are you there God? In Mary Anne Misses Logan, Kristy says something to the affect of, "Can you imagine Alan Gray reading Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. I mean, there's bra stuff in that book." It always cracked me up how she mentioned bra stuff and not period stuff, since that was featured more prominently in the book.

Frankly, I can't imagine a boy picking up that book at all.
