I don't quite care for Kristy so much in the Little Sister series. In fact, she acts down to Karen's level a lot, and she seems to always have some way to try to outsmart her, or subdue her.
Like in the New Year's book, she raises her eyebrows and questions Karen's many resolutions. In the BSC Kristy would probably encourage her and say "good for you Karen, i'm impressed." She would also be proud of her. Kristy is always proud of her charges when they do things that are above and beyond.
Or like in Karen's Brothers, when Karen gets angry at the boys Kristy tells her "oh well what will you do when you need something?" and Kristy challenges her to get Emily Michelle to speak for her and karen tries and then its like Kristy is smug and happy Emily didn't do anything Karen said.
Kristy, in the BSC would take this time to talk to Karen and try to reason and tell her things, comforting things, and try to get Karen to understand that she's being hurtful.
Is it because ghostwriters are writing for LS and they choose to make Kristy a real pain?
Or maybe Kristy's coldness stems from its Karen's world, and in Karen's books they are trying to teach the person reading the book to work things out themselves, or they give Kristy a persona that is simular to what most kids have at home: a sis who is not so nice?

I don't like Kristy in LS either, for all of the reasons you just stated. Sure they had their cute sister moments at times (i.e. the end of Karen's Big Sister with the Sisters Always bracelets) but the rest of the time I found myself wondering in some books why Karen looked up to Kristy so much when she was such a pain to her. I felt that Kristy just didn't understand Karen at times and agree that she was always trying to outsmart her. Maybe it was the ghostwriters, but maybe it was because Kristy was jealous of Karen because she had a dad while hers walked out on her and her family. That could've put a strain on their sisterly relationship a bit. However, I do like Kristy in BSC. She is portrayed much better there and even though she doesn't like Karen much in the beginning of that series, they do end up getting along .

it's interesting to see kristy from karen's perspective. she does not seem like the perfect big sister she is in the bsc books.

I think that in Karen's Two Families, Karen goes to Kristy and tells her that she wants to spend more time at her dad's house and Kristy doesn't seem to care how much it bothers Karen that she doesn't see her father a lot. Kristy basically tells her "at least you get to see your dad". I think that was kind of harsh of Kristy to tell a 7 year old. Kristy doesn't see her dad because her dad doesn't want anything to do with her. Karen doesn't see her dad often become the court says she can't. I think that Kristy could have been more understanding with Karen's complaint.

in a way i think it's more realistic than in bsc, where kristy was this perfect big sister all the time.

i just got done with Karen's Two Families and I was really upset with Kristy how she acted to Karen. She should understand the most how it feels to miss a father and to want to be with one.

another thing that makes me hate LS Kristy: in the Ski Trip book shes amazed to see Karen IS a good skater. like as if she doubted or thought karen was just being an empty bragger. D:

I think Kristy's jealousy comes into play in LS.

^ You think under the surface she's jealous of Karen's being born into that family?

I think she's jealous that Karen's parents are divorced yet Karen still spends a lot of time with both of her parents; and Karen has this giant huge family that is really supportive. Kristy did spend a lot of her childhood being responsible for David Michael and Kristy's dad doesn't even remember her birthday.
