Why are all the little kids thumbsuckers?

I was reading in the little sister series and Andrew seems to suck his thumb a lot when Karen starts scaring him

Then I start with the Snowbound super special and Claire can suck her thumb while playing head, shoulders, knees and toes, and doing seemingly endless things at the same time! (talented kid lol)

As I'm reading on, it seems a few of the clients are thumbsuckers! I wonder why?

Because a lot of little kids are? I am one of four; my little brother and I sucked our thumbs and my younger sister and older brother did not.

It's really common. I sucked my thumb until I was 5 or so, and the two girls I nanny for (ages 4 and 18mo) are both thumbsuckers.
