Just reread this one really fast and will reread and post more when I have more time but I wanted to ask something that has been bugging me. I might have just missed it but how does Kristy know for sure that she is even related to Christina Thomas? That is a fairly common last name and the connection seems really weak but yet she is positive that they are related and even thinks the inheritance would go to her? ? What about her Dad's parents? Why doesn't she contact them? Also, if Cokie is the granddaughter of the woman who is related to Christina and Kristy is Christina's great-great something, doesn't that make Cokie and Kristy distant cousins? I don't think the book mentioned that point but I think it is interesting... Just some big questions that I had. This one wasn't terrible but seemed even more "full of holes" than the other books, some of which have many "holes" and questions themselves.

It's been a long time since I read this one, but I'm pretty sure they touched on Cokie and Kristy being related. Not sure, though.

From what I remember the only real reason Kristy thought they were related was because of the Christina/Kristin Thomas thing. I think it would have been more understading if her name had been Pzrikozski or something less common than Thomas.

Didn't Kristy think they looked a little alike too? Then again, they think that Kristy and MA look alike too.

I remember something about Kristy looking like Christina but think it's still pretty weak "evidence" that they are related. Then again, Kristy is friends with Claud who was SURE she was adopted just because she couldn't find baby pictures of herself.

Seriously though, if they're going solely on last names and looks--why didn't they think that Dawn was connected to Morbidda Destiny? Her mom's maiden name was Porter...and I'm sure Granny and Pop-Pop are looking old just like poor Morbidda.

I've often thought of that. This book really, really irritates me how Kristy is convinced of the relationship, enough to think that she's actually in line for an inheritance. (especially annoying to read after hitting so many false trails in geneology research) Now if her name would have been Dumschat, that would have been a different story... ;D

Yeah, the whole book Kristy is so sure she's related to Christina because they have the same last name, they look alike (well, she only finds that out at the end), and they're both strong-willed, have older brothers, blah blah. Even Mildred Abbott is like "hmm, maybe you two ARE related." And gives her Christina's locket at the end, when Cokie or someone in their family really should have had it. Just dumb. I thought it was hard to believe that they would make the full moon connection and be so sure about it, just by looking at that perfect circle around the date on the letter.
I do like any mention of Watson's cool library, though, and that comes up. I liked the stakeout, seemed very much like the gathering at the cemetery in MA's Bad Luck Mystery. Claudia brought every kind of Fig Newton known to man, which was kind of a WTF moment. Why Fig Newtons, particularly? So Dawn and Stacey could eat them? They didn't need any snacks when they were at the cemetery...
I liked reading about Kristy's outfits, too - the one she wears to tea with Mrs. Abbott and the high necked black velvet dress she wears to the party.

Oh, I forgot about Waton's library - I love that too. I actually love his whole house and have always wanted a library like that (so does my dad so maybe someday... I had forgotten the Fig Newtons thing but that's funny - She seems to really like them. Yuck! Why would they need so many snacks anyway for the stakeout? It's Claudia, though. Doesn't have to make sense.

I don't think having older brothers is herititary. Does Kristy actually use that as reasoning for her being related to Christina?

No. Should have made that clearer - her primary reason is their last name. She doesn't use their similarities as reasoning, just as wishful thinking, kind of.

This is actually one of my favorite mysteries. It's so much more like an early BSC book, rather than a ridiculous, convoluted mess that many of the later mysteries became. Sure, Kristy's reasoning for believing herself to be a descendent of Christina is flimsy and coincidental, but it's the reasoning of a thirteen year old. I enjoyed this book because it has my favorite type of BSC mystery, one that involves a lot of "what ifs?" and silliness and in the end, remains a mystery.

I just finished this one (re-read) and there was much that I liked, and somethings that I didn't. First, the good: Kristy telling us that she might have been just as cranky as the kids she was sitting for, but she was not going to suck her thumb like Emily Michelle. Thank Kristy, I needed to know that you, at 13, do not suck your thumb. Claudia and Stacey dressing up for some midnight digging. Oh, that is so something I used to do. (Don't ask). The snacks at the midnight dig. It reminded me of the time on Buffy when Anya, Xander, and Willow tagged along for some slaying with Riley, but they munched on chips like it was a movie. I can so picture Claudia and Stacey standing around, eating candy while everyone else digs. Hilarious. Also, Cokie possibly, but unlikely, related to Kristy. Hah! I also liked how Cokie acted in this one. It wasn't too mean or anything. A little OOC but whatever. The Weird: Charlie seems to be way to willing to drive around his 13 year old sister and her friends and drop them off somewhere they aren't supposed to in the dark. The Bad: The plot was pretty obvious -- even as a kid I knew right away that the arboretum (I hope that is spelled correctly) would be tied into the Christian Thomas thing. I also know that Thomas was a common name. All the kids wanting to hang out at the arboretum. What's up with that? I wouldn't have wanted to, I would have much rather gone skating or stayed at home and read or gone to a museum, or, well anything besides spending the day doing yard work. But maybe it was just a nice change of pace? Consistency: it mentions Kristy's fear of loose teeth, which is nice. Also, David Michael (I just realized his name is dave thomas) being a champion whiner.
