Assuming Richard was like my mother, Mary Anne would have to leave the number of where she was going to be that day. Nobody would have even known if Logan had called, unless one of those precocious stinkers answered the phone. That would be my mom too.

Just read this one. Not my favorite SS but not horrible. Wow, this one was especially believable! <--That was obviously sarcasm! Jessi's parents are seriously stupid. She's 11! She can't take care of 2 kids for a weekend! Dawn was annoying with her pessimism. I LOVED Jeff in this one! Normally Jeff is really annoying but in this one he was awesome! Such a sweet kid, which is different from his moodiness and joke telling. I thought it was cool how he caught the fish! The Newtons (and all other parents as well) are also stupid. Who entrusts two 13 year olds to sail a boat with children?!

I agree! While this was my favorite when I was a child, I see how unrealistic it is! Insanity is what I would call it. Allowing Jessi to babysit an infant and an 8 year old for a weekend! Allowing Claudia and Dawn to take the little kids...
I really liked how Claudia kept her cool though. Dawn was worse than the kids. Poor Claudia had to take care of all of them!

^I know! All Dawn did was sit around and complain and cry! Claud deserved a medal just for putting up with Dawn! Claudia was awesome in this one, too. Never knew she was so practical!

I loved this book when I was younger, but I now am wondering wtf ann was thinking. I mean, really. Leaving an 11 year old alone for a weekend? Thinking that sane parents would let their kids go sailing with a couple of 13 year olds who just got their licenses, and no adults? Putting a 4 year old on a sailboat when you know he has a fever?
And most of all? None of these kids have any sort of lingering fear of Dawn or Claudia, or water. Sending Jeff back right away? I liked the mirror trick though, I probably wouldn't ahve thought of that. I'm kind of surprised it worked.

I also loved this book when I was younger and I sincerely wish that I could find my copy so I could read it again, but still. Okay, um, way to get Child Protection Services after you, or something, Stoneybrook! I know we're supposed to overlook the unbelievableness (is that a word? lol) of the whole thing, but it's not really a good message to send to kids. No wonder I always used to get angry at my mother for not letting me stay overnight by myself when I was younger...

Even when I read this book when I was younger did I know something was wrong with the 11 year old Jessi being left in charge for a long weekend of a baby and Becca. The last time I had a babysitter was when I was 12, because my nieces were there, they were 10 and 6, and my parents wouldn't get back until 3 in the morning (plus there was supposed to be a hurricane/tropical storm that day)! Then the time I was left by myself, I was 14/15, and even then we got back to the house really late, my brother was a phone call away, and only 4 hours were spent in the dark by myself. Plus, I didn't have to take care of anyone but myself, and we had two HUGE boxer dogs.

I thought it was really unrealistic that Jessi was left in charge for the weekend too, I'm sixteen and I don't think my mom would let me stay a whole weekend by myself.
I liked Mallory's chapter where they went out searching, though. Jordan seemed to be smarter than the babysitters in that chapter when it came to boats, though. Maybe that's why Mr. Pike wanted him on his boat.

I always liked how Claudia got a chance to shine and be smart in this one. I never gave a thought to Jessi taking care of her siblings when I read the book as a kid, but now I can't help but wonder if that's even legal!

^I think there's some kind of law that says you have to be at least 12 to be left alone for so many hours -so I'd definitely say it's illegal.

I haven't read any BSC books in a while now, but for some reason I started thinking about this one today. I really like the Dawn/Claudia combination, but which sitters would you have liked to see in this situation? And what charges too, for that matter? (Don't worry about why/how they would be involved in the trip)
I would have liked MA and Mallory, because they're the two least self-assured members of the club, though I think they would have handled the situation pretty well. And charges... Maybe Claire Pike instead of Jamie, Jackie Rodowsky, Charlotte Johanssen and James Hobart. (I basically picked the most unlikely charges there, but I think it would be interesting to see, especially with Jackie there, lol)

^I agree, Jackie would have been hilarious to see, and Claire would have been interesting too.

Even though this book is very improbable, it's a favorite of mine anyway, perhaps because as a kid I enjoyed treasure hunts and also the idea of this book was so different than any other BSC one before or since. I've read through all the posts and it sounds like the census is that on the cover is: Stacey, (looking nothing like any other photo of her) with a taller, thinner Mallory behind her. BTW, (maybe this had not happened yet--I recently re-read all my books) but didn't Mallory get her hair cut in Mallory and the Trouble with Twins? If so, why is it LONGER here than at any other time? Awful picture. Anyway, next to Mallory is indeed a boyish Kristy with no neck, Jamie, and Mary Anne, who is wearing the oddest (and ugliest ) blue shoes. Yes, to other posters, Claudia looks....to be polite...strange! The "creature"/person with the yellow shoes is supposed to be Haley. Of course, there's Dawn with her hand on a tiny for a ten year old Jeff's knee--honestly Jamie looks more mature. Jessi and Becca to follow. Is that right? On added picture comment is that, my illustration of them backwards. Haley suddenly got awfully tall as did Jeff, who was supposedly back in CA by then. Like everyone else, I loved how Claudia finally believed in herself and got to shine. I enjoyed reading about Jordan in a leader type role aside from simply being one of the triplets. Lol, the logistics, well there weren't any! I don't think anyone on here mentioned this (forgive me if I missed it) but would the Community Center really allow 2 thirteen year olds and 4 younger kids to go off sailing without so much as a walkie talkie, radio, or really stretching it...a cell phone? I realize out on the water, signals might not have worked for phones but without any form of communication? I don't think so! On a different yet related note has anyone ever done a fan re-write of this book? Maybe made the adventure last a little longer and been a bit more real?
