I actually knew most of these things. Although, it does remind me that I need to read some of the updated versions. I think I have one updated version (#6 Kristy's Big Day). I have tons of the earlier books with the updated covers (the ones with their faces going down the lefthand side), but I'm pretty sure they didn't change the details of the stories for those.

I didn't realize the text was updated in some books! Judy Blume did that with her books, too. Changing "VCR" to "recording device" sounds weird and doesn't really make it any more timeless at this point. Stupid, ever-changing technology, lol.
I wonder what the series may have been if that Scholastic editor had approached a different author with the idea...

In the updated versions (again, the 2010 re-releases that got a full makeover, inside and out, not just the ones released in the late '90s and early 00s' with the updated modern covers), I think they change "mixtape" to "playlist", among other things. They also take out specific details to money (in #3 "The Truth About Stacey", she originally says she doesn't have enough money for popcorn in NY, because she only brought a dollar, not remembering that things are more expensive; in the updated version, it simply says she doesn't have enough), or they change the prices (I think in #6 "Kristy's Big Day", they get 250$ each for baby-sitting the week of the wedding, instead of 125$ each). Some of the changes are innocuous, but I feel like some of the changes just further highlight how old the books are.
If they kept them as is, you could just be like, "Oh lolz, the 80s!", but in trying to update them, they quickly get even further out of date. Plus with some things changed, and other things not, it just gets incredibly incongruous.

I didn't know the text was changed either. All of mine were second hand copies.
