I just reread these posts as I figured Aln posted on this. This was one of Afton's favorite LS books. I was talking about this book the other day. Afton did have a mullet when she was little. She had such long pretty hair when she got older and the last few years she just let me cut the back a little. We would always laugh when my sister cut my hair and I got a Gloriana. It made me smile to read all of these posts. Karen books are great, I really miss Afton telling me about them or leaving me pages to read.

^ I just re-read all Afton's posts too, she always had such great stories that related to the books or discussion!

I also loved Afton's posts too! I always get a good laugh when I look at the cover of Karen's haircut. Karen was going a little overboard with the makeup and stage names though!

I cracked up at the Gloriana reference in Mary Anne's Makeover

I did feel bad for Karen because she already felt ugly and then became ugly. I thought that it was mean of Hannie when she that Karen couldn't come to her wedding. I like that Karen's Haircut was referenced in Mary Anne's Makeover.

i read this book. That was horrible haircut. If, I was Karen. I'll buy a wig or find other hairdresser to fixed it.
Last year, I went to hair Salon. (Where you walk in & wait your turn.) My original hairdresser was busy with other client. So, I got stuck with this one lady. (That never cut my hair before.) After she was done. I look like a boy. Took months, for grow back down by my chin. I like it short, cause it's easier take care of. I have thick hair. When I was 13 or 14 years old. I grew it out longer. Took forever to dried & to comb it out. The lady, who cut my hair. She got fire. Other clients were claiming how awful she did their hair.
Then, I went to other hair salon. (It was a man doing my hair.) He barely cut or anything look awful. So, we went to the Salon, we usually go to. My hair stylists fixed it, for me. My mom told me, never again don't have a man cut your hair. So, I don't.

I'm not usually a big Karen supporter, but I just re-read this one the other day (my first LS book in probably 15 years!) and I felt for Karen. It's one of the worst feelings in the world to look in the mirror and hate what you see, even as a kid. Hannie was a bad friend. But at least she made a love connection with Ricky. All of the new names were ridiculous and funny. And I bet she looked a complete fright all made up. I don't see why she wasn't sent home from school or, at the very least, made to wash her face. And I'd have refused to go to school if I was given a mullet I didn't ask for. Sorta OT, but after reading this, I agree with everyone that says Karen is much more likable in the LS series than in BSC.

I still don't really understand why Lisa, upon seeing the mullet, didn't just have Gloriana cut the rest of Karen's hair short. It would have taken longer to grow out, sure, but on the plus side, it wouldn't have been a mullet. Hannie was terrible in this one, very nasty about Karen's haircut. She was just as mean as the rest of the BSC was to Mary Anne in Mary Anne's Makeover.

Lisa wasn't paying attention at the salon (thanks for acting up, Andrew , and I don't think she asked Karen if she liked the cut until they got outside. I think she originally thought Karen asked for the mullet.

If I was her mother I would not care what she said --- no mullet for my 7 year-old! Mullets are not becoming of little girls anyway.

^Eh, I've never found a mullet flattering on anyone.
I would assume Karen had showed Lisa the picture of the style she wanted. I agree it would have been more flattering all cut short. Lots of girls have short hair and it is often quite cute... mullets, not so much.

I got this book because of comments from this board! I was going to comment on how much Karen looked like a drag queen in one of the illustrations, supprraz already beat me to it!

It looks so weird in the illustrations, even the one from the back at the "wedding" where she's otherwise dressed pretty normally. Okay, she's dressed up, but in a dressy way, not her lovely-ladies plastic-jewelry way.

I think I coloured one picture and emphasized on the makeup when I was bored Was anyone else "howling" when Karen first told Ricky off and called him an owl? ;D
