This kid is such a spoiled brat! I disliked him immensely in BSC no 15 Little Miss Stoneybrook And Dawn. When he wanted to go back to California he didn't take his mother's or sister's feelings into consideration. Being 9 years old isn't an excuse either. And he's such a brat whenever he has to go back to Stoneybrook for a vacation. Like, would it kill him to see his own mother?? Plus he was awful to Richard too.
And I just reread SS no 14 (I still love it despite him) and Jeff is still a whiny brat.

Well most of the Schafer family members can at least be considered selfish-in part or especially because they tend to be reluctant to compromise. Sharon certainly made compromises more difficult in moving so far away (although over time she became a lot more willing to compromise) and if Jeff was inconsiderate to Dawn she very much was so in response (outrage that he would split up the family when it already had been, dad should just be ignored (I guess she blamed him the most), and Jeff was missing a lot of people, especially when she soon after also longed to move back and be back with dad).
I don't recall him being reluctant to visit his mother but agreed he was too harsh and hostile to Richard. His misbehavior at school also seemed pretty bratty.

Divorce can tear a family apart. I don't blame Jeff or Dawn for being in survival mode and ultimately pursuing what was going to make themselves happy.

I don't like his character. He's a spoil brat and mean. I rarely read Dawn's books.

I hate both Jeff and his sister. I find them both selfish and spoiled. Plus that I got sick of their shameless coast hopping and their playing with their mother's feelings after awhile.

This is a great point, and one that I hadn't considered but I see now. It's almost hard to blame Jeff for his jerky moments when you consider the hand he was dealt. He was raised with people who take things to extremes and overreact. I always liked Jeff, and I really love him in Island Adventure, but I am more willing to overlook his shortcomings now. I don't think he ever did anything as rash as stealing a credit card and flying cross-country out of spite.

I actually like Jeff a lot and feel a ton of sympathy for him. The poor kid loses his dad, gets moved halfway across the country, and he is getting continually bullied at his new school with no repricussions for the bully. I don't blame him one bit for wanting to go home - that's a lot of trauma in a short amount of time for a 9 year old. The fact that as soon as he was back in CA he stopped "causing trouble" really stands out to me.

Huh. I guess I don't read enough of the books where Jeff was a brat. I actually liked him a lot during Dawn On The Coast. Then again, that was the first BSC ghostwritten book...but isn't Dawn's Family Feud (the worst of Jeff) also ghostwritten?

I like Jeff, he acts like a real ten year old even if that means acting like a brat sometimes. I really liked his character in Island Adventure.

I don't mind him considering I can admit to being difficult because of unhappiness...also don't see what the big deal about him hating museums is considering not everyone likes them..I have issue with the "way" he stated his dislike, not the dislike itself. But I agree he was spoiled in certain instances.
