We learned in 3rd grade as well.
In Russia they don't teach block printing at all. From the first day of school, you're learning cursive.

There really isn't any such thing as what we call printing in Russian.

There really isn't any such thing as what we call printing in Russian. Not quite true. My ex prints, actually. I also had a phonetics teacher who wrote in all caps, kind of a cyrillic handwriting version of Standard BSC "Boys all write in all caps" handwriting. It's not common, since the "proper" way to write is pretty drilled into kids from age 7+, but there are always outliers.

FWIW my dad uses an all-caos thing that he says he developed when he did drafting work. I don't known how he wrote before that....

So, Karen's Sleepover... I really would have liked if Karen or one of them had asked what exactly Pamela would rather have been doing when she was "bored out of her skull"...what did she consider fun besides...well, brushing her hair? I have a problem with the way "The Wizard of Oz" is depicted here as only a scary movie...like it was all about the witch, like Dorothy is having this really horrible dream and she needs to wake up to escape, when that's not the case. They all let out "sighs of relief" at the end. Lame. Funny that Kristy explains all about thunderstorms when she's not that good of a science student! Nice quote from Karen..."you just never know about surprises. I guess that is why they are surprises." And, awesome: Finally Nancy said, “I think Pamela is a jerk.”
Jannie gasped.
It was time to change the subject. When I read this one now I still hear my mom's inflections from when she used to read it aloud to me

About cursive, I was in a grade 1/2 class and the first graders were learning how to print and the second graders were learning cursive. It seemed scary to think about learning someday. In second grade, I was in a 2/3 class and the third graders were taught first and then the second graders, probably after reviewing printing. In third grade, we learned cursive from scratch and it went on for quite awhile and more defined. In fourth and fifth grade, we did a unit on it for the first 2-3 weeks of class and moved on. I also think Beverly Cleary's Muggie Maggie is a great book for source of inspiration to learn and improve on your cursive as a child

I have to say that, for a guy, I have amaaaaazing teacher-esque printing and writing. I used to actually practice a lot as a kid (lame, I know). I can even write EXACTLY like each of the BSC members!

BooBoo, in response to your comment about thunderstorms, Kristy & science, I think thunderstorms could also be a geography-type thing. I am really into the weather (and even know the "science" behind it) and although I am not bad in science, I'm not the best either.
