If this would’ve been turned into a movie with babysitting scenes I would’ve been so happy. This episode was too perfect. I loved every minute of this. I watched this episode a whole bunch of times the weekend that it came out and I practically know all the words to it. Lol. I’m reading the books first before watching the episodes just in case someone is wondering why I only watched the first episode that weekend.

I loved this. Loved the vintage see-through phone, loved the explanation of why they were using the landline, loved that Karen had a Wednesday Addams vibe going on, I just loved everything! I think all the girls are great in their roles, but Kristy especially is spot-on, imo. Perfect casting there. I agree - Kristy is pretty spot on. I liked that her attitude and overbearingness was addressed by Claudia as the reason they stopped hanging out so much. It seemed like that would have been a better explanation than being soooooo much more mature than MA and Kristy. I also really liked Watson. He was younger and hotter than portrayed in the books, but at least Kristy can’t give him crap for being bald. He seems like a genuinely nice guy who really wants Kristy to like him. I felt it more here than in the book. I hate this Karen just as much at the book Karen. She’s so annoying. I love that later Mrs. Porter was like, “Yeah. I’m a witch. Aaaaaaand. . . ?” Hopefully that will shut down any future storylines of Karen being an unbearable brat to her neighbor. But this Mrs. Porter seems like she won’t take any of Karen’s crap. Maybe she’ll put Karen in her place - or put a disappearing spell on her and I can be happy!!

Kristy accusing her mother of liking Watson for his money was pretty low. Her being so against Watson in the book is a little weird, aside from her just not being as idealized as she quickly became, and the episode trying to say that the reason wasn't that she just would have disliked any new boyfriend/stepfather came off worse, and it would have been better if she still liked Karen and Andrew from the beginning. Charlie and Sam being jerky was also disappointing.

I FINALLY watched this. And oh my god, I absolutely loved it. So many references to the books that I immediately recognized - Kristy's visor and director's chair, Mary Anne's braids and little girl clothes (and her all-pink room that she hated), Claudia's hollow book! I totally missed all the spelling errors in Claudia's email - again, perfect!
I agree that Kristy's bossiness and stubbornness were definitely amplified because while that eventually became her one personality trait, in the early books I never really got that vibe. It was more subtle. She was pretty hostile to Watson in Kristy's Great Idea, so I was expecting her to be nasty to him. But yeah, accusing Elizabeth of only liking him for his money was a low blow! Same with accusing Watson of abandoning his kids while he was still on the phone but I think she does that in the book too.
I've always pictured Watson as much older so it was a huge surprise seeing him younger. Same with Mrs. Porter/Morbidda Destiny. We only got a glimpse of Karen but I was still annoyed by her XD
I also agree that we see more of why Claudia drifted apart from Kristy and Mary Anne. That always felt kind of glossed over in the books. Like there'd be some offhand comment about how Mary Anne and Kristy still played with dolls or were soooo babyish compared to Claudia. Kristy's abrasive personality definitely feels like a reason why Claudia would start hanging out less.
I was hoping to hear "sheep are IN" but I'm still hoping that comes up in the series because it's such a classic line.
I appreciate how the modern technology we have now compared to when the book was first written in 1986 answers all the questions we've had over the years about how the club would run. Like notebook entries being in Google Docs so they'd be easier to find and look back on!

I've always pictured Watson as much older so it was a huge surprise seeing him younger. Watson isn't my type, but he's actually kind of attractive? Mark Feuerstein has appeared shirtless on TV and that's not something I ever expected from Watson. But they made him a huge dork to even it out.

Watson is always described in the books as older and balding so that's what I always pictured.
