Part of me wonders if she faked needing glasses, because that's what I did. Yup. I pretended I couldn't read the eye chart as well as I could because I wanted them for some reason. And I got them, and wore them for a week and then just stopped. And now I'm very nearsighted as an adult. I did the same thing! The some boy teased me, but my teacher made him wear them and everyone laughed at him. He cried. I think he liked me, not sure. Anyway, I am far sighted now, but I think that comes more from reading BSC next to my window at night and using the streetlight diagonally across the road as a light, not karma

I kind of wanted glasses when i was younger......but my eyesite while it can be a pain sometimes and have to squint, it's not bad enough for glasses... kind of wonder what i'd look like . But i think it would drive me nuts...on my nose... Lol I just reread this one for the first time in YEARS... I'm a Karen fan, but at least this one she's not annoying. (just a normal 6 going on 7 year old as far as i can tell). One thing that drove me nuts, and it did in other LS books too. Why the heck would they take the stuff out of the desk and move it into another desk? WHY??? We just moved the desks around. Seriously, art teachers rolled a cart down the hall? (this got me in The Baby-Sitters remember, Claud's memory.). My art teachers always had their own room.

^We moved the desks around at our school too. They're not that heavy... you just drag it across the floor. And as for the art room thing, maybe Stoneybrook Academy was a very... very, very small school? .. and I like the cover on this book! It's neat you can see all the kids in Karen's class... I seriously had the same shoes as Hannie growing up...

yeah we were always moving out desks around for new combinations of assigned seating... hmm. maybe the desks at stoneybrook academy are the really old-fashioned kind which would be too heavy to move around?

Lol my elementary school was tiny. (the playground was awesome though!) they remodeled it when i was in fourth grade... i remember even then when teachers were out of their rooms they got put in trailers...seriously. trailers were on the parking lot and we would go out to classes in them...each class got a turn in them (we were right before winter break though so we only got 3 days)
besides..Stoneybrook Academy had an auditorium...we never had THAT Lol

I got glasses when I was in Kindergarten, so I feel for poor Karen here. But I don't think that I got teased about my glasses - we were so young that this was kind of before anyone teased anyone, you know? I'm not sure if I wanted them or not though - I know now, I wish I didn't have glasses. I would get contacts but I don't think my eyes could handle it - I can't even put on eyeliner, my eyes are that sensitive! You can't even go near my eyes without them shutting. I remember the first pair of glasses I got (well, I got two pairs, but I didn't have to switch them like Karen did. This was just for when my first pair would inevitably break, lol). I remember everything looked sooo different. And I spun around in the living room and the floor looked like this huge hole/vortex thing had formed. Gosh, I can still remember that, even though it was like, 13 or so years ago odd.

I can't do contacts either. I've tried, very unsuccessfully.

I liked how Karen made sure her outfit matched her glasses, lol.

I liked that too . I just read this last night in e-book form and it was just as wonderful as when I read it years ago . I loved the part where Karen was at the eye doctor and he asks her if she knew the alphabet and Karen replies, "Yeah I can read." ;D

^ That part was really cute. ;D To bring up an old topic about moving the desks as opposed to moving the kids (though I should just let this die since it's already been discussed but I was thinking about it. ;D) In some of my old schools, the teachers moved the desks at night to change the seating patterns but we usually moved our stuff. I think this is actually easier than sliding the whole desk, etc. As for the Art cart, it depended on the school (early elementary had it even though it was a large school with an auditorium and later elementary/jr. high had a room). I think it just depends on the school so never really even considered why they didn’t move the desks. Seems easier for me to just have the kids move their stuff. As for wanting glasses, I always worried on vision test day that I would have to get them. Maybe I just didn’t want them because I knew how many problems they cause for my mom and how bad my aunt’s sight is (she actually just had to have risky surgery on her eyes to “stop the bleeding” in them and now can’t see at all and we’re praying that she gets her sight back. They scratched her cornea, I guess. )

^ Thanks. I'm really upset about the prospect of her being blind. That just seems so horrible, especially since she used to be a literature teacher and loves to read. I can't imagine not being able to see to read, even just having trouble. I feel for anyone with vision problems....
