This graphic novel was actually fun to look at. A ton of little things happened in the book that illustrations made sense for. The original book had a lot of pop culture references that were pretty much scrubbed off of this.
Changes I noticed:
Original: Karen forgot her new jeans with zippers up the legs.
GN: She forgot her new jeans with sequins. (How is that a fashion update? Across town, Mallory was punching air.)
Andrew’s cereal prize was changed from tattoos to stickers. Karen went from getting an empty prize package to nothing at all.
Original: Karen wanted to watch Mr. Ed. Andrew turned on what sounded like a comic book cartoon. Lots of “pow, blam, capooey” noises from the TV. Watson had to look up the TV schedule in TV Guide.
GN: Mr. Ed was switched to a generic “my show.” Andrew was ironically watching the type of cartoon that Karen said she liked. Cutesy animals.
Original: Karen called Hannie a toad.
GN: Toad was changed to “bad friend.” Personally I think that “bad friend” is much meaner. Clearly she was not really a toad. She could be a bad friend.
All mention of the Alexander book was removed.
Original: Karen rode in the mail truck with Mr. Venta and helped deliver mail. I was very disapproving of this, btw. Lol.
GN: She just liked to talk to him. He told her about all of the dogs he saw during his route. (I thought of all the different porch cam videos out there of delivery guys either playing with/petting dogs or running from them in fear.)
Original: Andrew got two movies in the mail from his godparents, Lady and the Tramp and The Secret of Nimh.
GN: He got “Adventure Friends” and “Cat Magic.” The Adventure Friends cover looked like zombie kids. The Cat Magic one had what looked like dead cats with angel wings.
Original: Karen got the front car seat next to Charlie while Sam sat in the back.
GN: Charlie grabbed her booster seat from one of the other cars and stuck it in the back.
Her treat switched from chocolate soda to root beer float.
Original: Charlie’s friends came into the soda shop and asked him if Karen was his girlfriend.
GN: Girlfriend was switched to Big Sister. I was kind of annoyed by the girlfriend thing, but then I thought the Big Sister thing was dumb, too. I don't have a good alternative suggestion, though.
Overall, I liked this the most out of the GNs that I’ve read so far. But, I feel like they definitely tweaked this one the most.
