Lol a Jeopardy forum! What does she think of the new hosts? Mayim was just fired. She's hardcore! She was indifferent about Mayim but likes Ken (I think he's too smarmy and some offensive tweets he did years ago resurfaced but he did apologize). I didn't realize Jeopardy airs different everywhere - also where I am, Wheel of Fortune airs first I do love Let's Make a Deal though. Karen had good taste! But where's the sick from school staple, the Price is Right?

Karen’s Goldfish. Karen had everyone sing “Who Did Swallow Jonah?” at Crystal Light I’s funeral. I don’t know this song. YouTube says it’s a Bible song. I don’t know why Karen’s class would be learning it in school.
She contemplated naming Crystal Light II “Esther” after Esther Williams (“this old-timey star that Ann Daddy and Elizabeth like to watch in black-and-white movies.”)

She contemplated naming Crystal Light II “Esther” after Esther Williams (“this old-timey star that Ann Daddy and Elizabeth like to watch in black-and-white movies.”) It always hits me with a curveball when religious songs pop up. Like in Dawn and the Big Sleepover when Raffi music is playing at the sleepover and it's the Who Built the Ark song. Like they never mention Sunday school, which is where I learned songs like that. Also, Raffi for a group of 2-5th graders is kind of weird too but that's another rant.

Karen’s Toothache. Karen became obsessed with fortune telling. She played Cootie with Andrew and had a Magic Eight Ball and a Ouija board. She also read the books Albert’s Toothache by Barbara Williams and Beezus and Ramona.
Karen’s Show and Share. Karen pretended that a (made-up) player from the San Diego Padres was a family friend. After she was finally caught in her lies, Pamela made fun of her and said she heard that Pete Sampras was Karen’s uncle and Shaquille O’Neal was her godfather. (I love that Shaq of all people got a mention in a LS book!)
Same book, Andrew was trying out different musical instruments. He was obsessed with the song “This Old Man.” At the very end he switched it up to “She’ll Be Comin Round the Mountain.”

Karen’s Little Witch had a ton of book references because Ms. Colman’s class dressed as book characters for Halloween. I mentioned most of them in the actual book thread, but Melody also read The Pain and the Great One by Judy Blume.
One of the other classes dressed as cartoon characters. Karen thought it would be fun to dress as Elmer Fudd, Charlie Brown (two bald guys? Lol.) or Lucy. It took me a good minute to realize she meant Lucy from Peanuts and not Lucille Ball.
Nancy taught Andrew the Monster Mash song. He kept calling it Monster Smash. They sang it a few different times in the book.
Karen and Hannie ate Scooter Pies at Hannie’s house. (Karen said that Lisa wouldn’t buy them.) I have never heard of them. They are equivalent to Moon Pies and don’t exist anymore.

And "I was working in my slab late one night." I used to love The Pain and the Great One

I skimmed back a few pages in the thread to see if these were already talked about. Karen’s Birthday had some good mentions. Karen’s class went on a bus field trip and stopped at McDonald’s. (An iconic field trip moment for generations of kids.) She looked through the Sears catalog for toy ideas. She asked for all of the Roald Dahl books for her birthday. (Kristy gave her The Witches which she had not heard of and was very excited about.) Karen compared Emily Jr. to Nicodemus from the Rats of NIMH. Everything except for Roald Dahl was removed from the graphic novel. (Kids now would be like “What is Sears? What is a catalog?”)

My class went on a field trip TO McDonald's back in the day! I doubt that would happen now too.

Karen’s Good-bye. Karen again mentioned the Little Mermaid (and Flounder). She again said that she didn’t like cartoons. She preferred Mister Ed. Sam played a Michael Jackson tape while the kids played a game of musical rug.

In Karen’s Doll Hospital, Hank and Bobby did a presentation on Arbor Day. They recited the poem “Trees” by Joyce Kilmer. I had to look it up. It has the words God, breast, and bosom in it. I would have been a giggly little boy saying that to the class.

Those songs are soooo dated. I remember the chewing gum song, but I haven't thought about it since I was a kid myself. If Ann picked references that dated better it would've done a better job showing how wise beyond her years Karen was. Seeing stuff nobody remembers just makes you sound crazy.

I learned the chewing gum song from Barney, of all places. Karen singing Barbra Streisand is hilarious though

I wonder if they would have known the definition of bosom. I taught some high school kids who pronounced it "boz-um." But they never read books so we were working with limited vocabularies.
I love that sad song scene. Karen singing Streisand alone in her room is why I will never quit her.
