Supposedly you don't feel the motion of the boat on a large liner.

I think the most unrealistic part of the BSC for me is the charges are so well behaved.

Not only is there little parental interest or supervision, but common sense and/or caring about their kids. The BSC rarely spend time with their own families. Their parents rarely catch a clue when something is wrong. But then The Pikes and Ramseys wouldn't allow Mal/Jessi to visit Stacey in the hospital, but not long after they both could explore NY on their own?
I agree that Mal having authority over her siblings is ridiculous, even with Jessi's help. But what's more unrealistic to me, is say Mal or Jessi baby-sitting outside of their homes for more than one kid. Barretts: 8, 5, and 2. Opposite spectrum is Corrie and Sean 10/9. Did Mal or Jessi ever sit for those two btw?
I think three moments "take the cake." First when Sgt. Johnson comes over to Claudia's House in Cat Burglar, all despondent, looking to the girls (almost) for his salvation only to be followed by his colleagues and superior arresting him at the Kishis.
Second, Mary Anne working at the Mall in "The Secret Life of MA Spier." I guess Sharon and Richard are eternally stupid and clueless as was Dawn Cerasi? (was that her last name) for hiring MA to begin with!
Third, the "magical" way Emily came to Stoneybrook.

The most unrealistic thing is the age of the girls. If they were even 15 and 13 I'd have a much easier time believing so many things! Jessi & Mal only being 11 is really hard for me to accept. Especially when 10 year olds are being baby sat.
I also find the age of the clients and their varying development levels hard to take sometimes.

One thing that was semi-unrealistic to me was how much these girls dated! When I was in middle school, boyfriends were for hall passes and lunch. They were mainly school-only. These girls were always with their boyfriends and seemed to be really seriously dating. Maybe it was that way in smaller towns?? I'm from a fairly large city (large for my area, anyway).

^I completely agree with that, U4me. Also the "seriousness," of those dates and relationships did not seem "real" at all. Like Richard (in real life), or any parent of a 13 year old, would allow their kid to go on evening dates, some of which were walking/being dropped off. Semi-related is that (maybe it's just super picky/non-adventurous eater me) but it sure sounded like, Stacey especially, enjoyed all sorts of cuisine. ITA with Candykane from a couple of years ago who wondered why the girls would even want to go to such a fancy place that required you to dress up.
The other thing I never quite fathomed was that they, especially as the series went on, seemed to baby-sit well into the evening on school nights. IMO, even the original 9:30 on weeknights seemed far-fetched to me because it was a constant. Didn't SMS start shortly after 8 or 8:30am? IDK, maybe it struck me because of how Mal and Jessi were not allowed to sit at night outside of their own families yet the reason for that was never mentioned. I would bet at least part of it would have to do with down-time, sleep, etc.

I feel like for me the most unrealistic part is all those dumb carnivals, parades and fairs they put on. I don't think anyone in the town would have gone. Maybe I don't understand small town life b/c I'm from a big city, but I really can't imagine people bringing their kids to some thing put together by 13 year olds!

^I know I'm in the minority but I liked the majority of the carnivals and baby-sitting chapters. I do agree having so many was un-realistic, especially because they seemed to come together so quickly and fluidly. What (I just thought of) is really odd and (if true) speaks awful volumes of Stoneybrook parents. We know in Stoneybrook, for the most part, parents are un-involved and indifferent in their children's lives--except for book or play banning and school spirit frenzies. These same people constantly either bring or hire a BSC sitter to watch their child(ren) at one of the above events. The parents make public their support of the BSC yet at home aren't showing the same loyalty and interest in their own kids. Pathetic. I hope it isn't true at all, just as I think about it, it almost seems as though it could be. :/

I especially hated the idea of parents hiring a babysitter to take their kids trick or treating. Parents really don't care to miss out on those things?? I guess it's all for the sake of a storyline and we think too much.

^There are too many people with kids in Stoneybrook if they all went trick-or-treating with their kids, there would be no one handing out candy - all the houses would be dark - and thus the kids would not be able to trick-or-treat. But really --- in all seriousness, it bothered me too.

^Lol, Sarish, thanks for the smile. I guess no one to hand out candy would never do. I don't think all the sitters ever baby-sat on Halloween at the same time, maybe candy duty was why! I do agree and would think especially the parents of the younger charges would want to experience their children's Halloween joy with them--at least for "one" year.

These girls were always with their boyfriends and seemed to be really seriously dating. Maybe it was that way in smaller towns?? I'm from a fairly large city (large for my area, anyway). What bothered me was that it always seemed so easy for them to date. Even whipping post Mallory had Ben Hobart. There never seemed to be a shortage of guys interested in them. The most unrealistic date for me had to be Claudia and Terry at the fancy restaurant and the foreign film. Wasn't Terry wearing a suit (tux?). Claudia pointed out to the reader that everyone else in the restaurant was about thirty years older than them.

Terry would have been believable as a 20-something. But a 13-year-old boy? No way.
