I found this one at a goodwill a couple months back. Tbh, that's part of the reason I decided to continue reading the series. Is that weird? Idk lol.
It's cringey and awkward, but I still find this book entertaining. I did feel really bad for Stacey, although I can't believe she thought she had a chance with Wes. Wtf Stacey! It's like she had no common sense.
To be fair, Wes didn't either. Having her help him file paperwork, giving her a ride, and dancing with her. Eeeeeeek. I think this might be an example of aspects of the series aging poorly. Maybe in the 90s, this stuff wasn't as suss. But now, all of these would be seen as major red flags. He absolutely shouldn't have said, "See you at the dance" or danced with her there. That's just telling her there's a chance. Wes strikes me as really naive. Maybe he was trying to be the "cool" teacher and went too far with it idk.
I actually liked her poem. I don't know much about poetry, though. But OMG when she have the poem to Wes and just stood there until he was done reading it... Stacey has nerve. I think it would've been more realistic to give him the poem, then rush off. Her behavior is actually quite concerning if I'm being honest.
About the subplot... dumbbbbb. Look, I love animals and I think goats are adorable. If circumstances were ideal, I would want a goat as a pet. But this subplot just didn't work for me. I don't buy Dawn and Mary Anne taking her on baby-sitting jobs. That is so dumb. There is no way all the parents would be down for it. Also, they were lucky Elvira or their charges didn't get hurt. I remember it differently; I thought members of the BSC were taking their charges to the barn to see Elvira. Maybe that's in another book.
Since this is an older print, it didn't have a note from AMM. I'm very curious about what she said about this one. I just don't feel the need to pay $3.99 just for the note just to find out it's about farms or something (sometimes the notes are disappointing, and sometimes they contain gems like how she thought about sending Mal to boarding school early on. That kind of stuff is pretty interesting).
