I just reread this book. Peter Lerangis has a slightly creepy knack for writing like a deluded teenage girl.
Stacey's loserliness gets to a Mallory level when she is in the throes of her crush on Wes. At one point, she swears that her "cottage cheese tasted especially fresh". I know that's always been a sign of ~tru luv~ for me.
I would never, ever, ever have tried to dance with a teacher at a school dance. Especially not a slow dance!

I thought I was the only one who noticed that! Ha!
I was embarrassed for Stacey in this book. Some scenes were almost difficult to read, particularly when she gave Wes that poem *cringes*
Good thing Wes wasn't a perve, because Stacey was shameless.

What I thought was funny was that the ghostwriter for this book was a guy - Peter Lerangis.
I have never read a book where Stacey was that shameless over a crush.

Aw, I liked this book! I liked the descriptions of the outfits that Stacey wore to class.
Is the dress that she's wearing on the cover an accurate portrayal of the way it's described? I'm terrible with technical fashion terms. If it is an accurate portrayal, though, then ew! For a suppposedly gorgeous dress that sophisticated Little Miss NY loves, it's a bit ugly.

What I thought was funny was that the ghostwriter for this book was a guy - Peter Lerangis. I suppose this is slightly sexist, but I always found it strange that Peter Lerangis wrote so many BSC and Cali Diaries books. Also, he was one of the more talented ghostwriters IMO. There aren't many guys I can imagine writing books for preteen girls. But ol' Mr Lerangis did a great job. Oh, it was an enjoyable read, for sure. Just a bit cringey in places.

What I meant was that a man writing about a 13 year old girl with that kind of shameless infatuation with an older guy is creepy. The way he portrayed Stacey - how she thought, how she behaved - was just creepy. I don't know if a woman writer would have portrayed Stacey the way he did. I just know that some guys wish that certain women were like that towards them and this book might have been a projection of that wish onto paper. (Sorry if that's offensive or creepy.)
Nonetheless, all in all, it was enjoyable, I would say. And yeah, that dress on the cover did look like someone shot the curtains.

Maybe he wrote about personal experience? Like, maybe when he was Wes' age (not that I know what age he was when he was the BSC's ghostwriter), some 13 year old girl had a crush on him and he wrote about that? Just a theory lol Geni

Hmmm, looking at it that way, it's entirely possible. There is an Australian writer for teens named John Marsden - for the record, he writes books far more mature content than the BSC (and that's putting it mildly). I remember when I was a teen, reading one of his novels Dear Miffy, which has some extremely detailed sex scenes involving a 15 yr old girl. I know it was fiction, just a book, but really... ew. I don't like the idea of some middle aged man writing about teenage girls in such an explicit manner. You have to wonder what's on their minds, whether they've just found a socially-acceptable outlet for their dark desires. Considering Peter Lerangis was a BSC ghostwriter it's unlikely, but I understand the creepiness factor.

What I always wondered after reading the subplot is how do the pets feel when people make them do all of that stuff - putting them in plays, dressing them up in God-awful outfits, hitching them to wagons, etc.
The dress was supposed to be have a "pastel floral paint" design (jeez) and so I guess the pic on the cover is pretty accurate. I dunno.

I recently saw a rerun of "Blossom" (remember that show?). It was the one where 'Blossom' falls in love with her substitute teacher played by Parker Stevenson. It totally reminded me of this book. This is one of the books that I remember after years of not reading the books. I don't know why. The one thing I didn't like was the description of Wes looking like Tom Cruise. I've never thought Cruise was hot, so it irritated me. It bugs me even more now with Cruise and the recent publicity that makes him look like a weirdo.

I thought the crush thing was on point.

I actually felt bad for Stacey...and I always kinda saw them meeting up when they were both older and ending up together.

I always laugh when Stacey makes a fool of herself over a guy. I also love when she does the same thing with Scott.

I cringe every time I read this book and Stacey gives Wes that poem. I'm totally mortified on her behalf.
Several years ago, there was a fanfic about Stacey meeting Wes while attending university in New York. It was never completed though. Too bad, as it was pretty good.
