i find it painful to read. Stacey is really pathetic in it. For someone sophisticated she sure is clueless in this book.

Hmm... I didn't find this book as painful as anyone else. I don't think I even cringed when reading it! And this is one that I reread a lot, and I quite enjoy it... I love the description of her cottage cheese and the dress she wears to the dance.

I agree with jen and hitzpink. I thought Stacey's teenybopper luv for Wes was cute and very realistic of a 13 year old. i think it's one of the few instances where one of the girls has a realistic experience with the opposite sex! Other than Wes offering her rides and dancing with her, of course

I like reading this book, but mostly because the time of year when it's set is one of my favorites. And when I was little, I loved reading about the clothes -- sneakers with lace shoelaces sounded so cool to me, hahaha. I do think Stacey's antics are pretty cringeworthy, but it's fun to snark on her!

I loved reading about Stacey's outfits, too. But I have to say, I was a little surprised that she wore the same dress twice in two weeks. She wore it on Wes's second day teaching (after she figured out that he "prefers dresses") and then again during his second week there. I would have figured she would be FAR too sophisticated to be repeating an outfit so soon!

She wore the same outfit twice? I remember her wearing that navy dress with the buttons, but I don't remember her wearing it twice! The dress she wears to the dance sounds so pretty in the book (well, the way she talked about it, it did), but it's sort of hideous on the cover. Shame.

Wow - Stacey was a bit dillusional in this one. I can totally see having a crush on a teacher. I had many myself but never thought they were going to fall madly in love with me. Did Stacey learn nothing from the experience with Scott in Sea City? He was even closer to her age than Wes and gave her a little more hope by calling her "babe", etc. This book was actually funny because Stacey was so far out of touch with reality. As for the subplot, I enjoy reading about Elvira. I had a goat when I was little and they are very difficult to deal with and it caused many mishaps. Actually, my family went through a couple goats trying to get a "good" one before finally giving up. They are cute, though. I loved the part about Buddy singing to the goat and the scene with Jamie Newton bleating in her face made me laugh so hard! Love how he gets so hyper sometimes.

Oh God I just looked as this bit that Stacey says when she finds out Wes's name and for some reason it makes me laugh - "Wes Wild Wes How the Wes Was Won" ;D Pretty suggestive

I thought the same thing about Wes's car. It is only seven years old, my car is 14 years old and it still runs fine! In fact I think it has a few more years on it.
Stacey was cringe worthy in this book, but I try to think about it in the perspective of a young middle school crush, and then it seems more realistic to me.

Maybe Wes got it used and had had it for seven years? Or maybe he's just a really bad driver.

The descriptions of Wes' car are kind of ridiculous. Although, honestly, my car is only 4 years old and runs like HELL. My car has been in accidents though. I imagine Wes' car to run like mine, but look a LOT uglier (my bumper is attached just fine, heh.)

What about Wes's car? It's been a while since I've read this one and I don't remember anything about the car (maybe I just skimmed over that part though Maybe I'll have to reread. I like this one anyway - especially the goat scenes.

^ It's a Toyota, and it's only 7 years old, but it's in horrible condition. Toyotas, for the most part, are very reliable when used, and 7 years old is nothing.
